Election 2012 Questions: Paul Falvo

At YkOnline.ca, we’re trying to keep you informed and connected to the people who would like to have a hand in the building and operation of Yellowknife but in a light-hearted way. We sent around the following questions to each of the candidates for mayor and council asking for a written or video response. As each candidate responds we’ll post their answers. You can follow all the 2012 Municipal Election posts with the tag “yzfelec2012“.

Where do you volunteer and why?

Downtown litter pickups, fund-raisers for NWT SPCA, CNIB and various groups, and just about everything my Kid is involved in. But, my biggest volunteer commitments are the Rotary Club (bike auction, lobsterfest, etc.) and the Fire Department. Being a volunteer (paid-on call) firefighter is physically and mentally challenging, it’s an essential community service, and means I get to hang out with a great bunch of people.

What is the most embarrassing thing you’ve done in public?

Does anyone honestly remember their most embarrassing moment? I was in a bar in Norman Wells. I wasn’t wearing my glasses. Stone cold sober and I walked in to the wrong washroom!

How will you communicate with residents, how will that be better than what is available now?

I’ll continue to use my COUNCILbites newsletter, and social media. Residents tell me often how much they appreciate my email updates. The most frequent comment I get is, “You’re the only one who answered my email.”

What do you have in your fridge?

A lot less than I used to! I’ve still got salsa, guacamole, olives, smoothie mix and cat food. Campaigning is hard work — but I haven’t resorted to eating the cat food yet!

How do people know you around town?

People are used to seeing me at events, and picking up trash downtown.

Where can you be found most often during the endless days in the summer?

In a canoe, every change I get! And dropping off my busy Kid at summer activities.

Describe what the Harbour Plan is in plain english and why it is, or isn’t important.

The Harbour Plan is either a much-needed clean-up — or an affront to what makes Old Town special. Maybe a bit of both. It’s important we preserve this unique area, while at the same time ensuring fair access to all residents and visitors.

Have you worked with any of the other councilor candidates before?

As a councillor, I worked with Cory, Lydia, Amanda and Bob. Adrian and I worked together on downtown litter clean-ups. Niels, Beaton, Dan, Rebecca and Phil are well-known to me from their community involvement. I’m looking forward to getting to know Linda and Ian better in the weeks ahead.

What is your favourite winter activity?

Snow castle, walking the Pat McMahon Frame Lake Trail and aurora watching.

Are you a first generation Yellowknifer?

Yes – I chose Yellowknife.

Have you worked on councils or committee before?

Since 2006 I’ve been a councillor. Before that, the Community Energy Planning committee.

  • wut kinda questions are these?
“I’d like to know what’s on yer Toast!?”
uh huh…. real important stuff here…

I’d like to know more about Green projects like this Geothermal Crap! I’ts prolly expensive, but better for the enviroment, so I’m for it.

Doesn’t bother me to have to pay more to save Muther Earth!

    • Hi Yo!

I understand your desire to learn more about the platforms of each of the candidates and where they stand on big issues. However, that is not what I was trying to accomplish with these questions. I state in the first couple sentences of each of these articles that I wanted to ask light-hearted questions so that Yellowknifers could learn more about the candidates themselves, not their stance on issues.

If you want the hard hitting information on the issues, I’m sure CBC North and NNSL have got that information.

      Cheers,Kyle

What was your name by the way?
