2012 Spring Trade Show in Photos

If you were to ask a business that was attending the Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce Spring Trade Show what it was about for them, they’d probably tell you it was for business but if you were to ask a visitor they’d say something totally different. I heard it over and over throughout the weekend, the Spring Trade Show for many was a socializing event. After going through a long cold winter it has become a time for people to come out and gather together.

Of course this is quickly followed with entering all the draws for free stuff but that is just a given.

To further confirm that point I can’t think of any one booth that truly stuck out to me. That was a lot of great businesses and people there but it was the same old same old. There are however a couple little businesses that I see have lots of potential and can’t wait to see them rise knowing if they play their cards right they could be a hit with Yellowknifers.

YkOnline.ca Bike Series Coming Soon

This summer I’m going to bike Yellowknife! Many Yellowknifers already bike all around Yellowknife and rarely use vehicles so I’m not doing anything new but I want to show it off.

Coming the summer I am going to be producing two series here on YkOnline.ca:

  1. Ride4Thirty – This is pretty self explanatory. For thirty days in a row I will do nothing ride my bike around Yellowknife. I will not use my Jeep. Although many already do this, I want to show that it is possible for even the average Joe to get around on a bike. This will most likely take place starting in the middle of June.
  2. Yellowknife Bike Trails – Over the course of the summer I am planning on biking as many of the trails in about around Yellowknife as I can. I will be recording all of them and then publishing each trail as a post on YkOnline.ca for everyone to use as references.

The first step to getting these series off the ground was the bike. Back in 2010 I was introduced to Ernie’s Sports Centre on Facebook and Twitter and since then they have helped me many times and shown me how to really be engaging on Social Media. So I am pleased to announce they will be sponsoring these series so check them out on Facebook and Twitter. Here is the first video of me putting together the bike:

This bike is fully setup for the terrain around Yellowknife. Front and rear suspension as well as 29″ wheels, which is perfect for speed and agility.

Of course once I finished building the bike on Saturday it was raining, so I didn’t get to ride it until Sunday. Here is my first ride of this sweet bike:

Watch for this series coming soon. You can subscribe below to stay connected to the series.

What is the current Yellowknife Vacancy Rate?

Are Vacancy Rates on the Rise in Yellowknife is the title of blogger Adrian Bell’s latest article on his blog Above All Yellowknife. He goes into the article explaining that in the Fall of 2011 the vacancy rate  in Yellowknife was 1.3% but dipped as low as 0.07% in the Spring of 2011.

Adrian goes on to explores the current housing market in Yellowknife. With the completion of the Copper Sky condos and the construction of the Niven Heights underway it seems that renters and condo dwellers have a more balanced market when it comes to purchasing.

I AM BETTY Download Day: April 23, 2012

Earlier this week we saw the release of the remixes to the song “Home and Dry” sung by Stephen Rees featuring Marla Signer, which was released on the Friday before. This song will be apart of the I AM BETTY soundtrack being released on May 25, 2012 but it is currently available along with the remixes now on iTunes.

What I AM BETTY is organizing now is an official Download Day leading up to the launch of the full soundtrack at the end of May, which you can preorder here. They are encouraging people to download and share the “Home and Dry” versions on April 23, 2012. You can buy and share them any time you want as well but they are hoping for a big push on the 23rd, which is a Monday for those wondering.

To take part you need to do two thing (or just one but two is better) on April 23, 2012:

1. Download at least one version of the “Home and Dry” song. Here are the links:

2. Share these links on Facebook and Twitter (or just one) with your friends encouraging them to support the I AM BETTY campaign as well.

Share the I AM BETTY Facebook Page now    |     Retweet about I AM BETTY now

And remember 100% of the funds raised from the sales of the song will go directly towards the construction of the home for women and women with children at risk of becoming homeless in Yellowknife.

If you are a non-profit group and have an event happening or something of the like send the information to info@ykonline.ca and I’ll do my best to help promote it within the community.

I AM BETTY Releases: “Home and Dry” and Two Remixes

Well we have some great things coming out of the I AM BETTY corner today. To be honest I’m not up on everything that is happening with the I AM BETTY campaign but I’m trying to follow and get the word out as best I can. So today we have two things to talk about.

The first actually launched on Friday. It was the I AM BETTY single “Home and Dry”.  It was released on iTunes for download, so go now! The song is by Stephen Rees and features Marla Signer.

The other release is happening today and it would be the launch of the 7th Heaven (P!nk, Far East Movement and Katy Perry) and High Level (Kelly Clarkson, Nicola Roberts of Girls Aloud and Drive, who are also featured on the “I Am Betty” soundtrack) “Home and Dry” remixes. You can get the 7th Heaven remix here and the High Level remix here.

I am betty campaign

In addition to getting great music keep in mind that 100% of the funds raised from the limited edition CD will go directly towards the construction of the Betty House, a place for women and women with children at risk of being homeless in the North.

Also coming next month will be the launch of the official “I Am Betty” Album and Remix, which will happen on May 25, 2012.

The Star’s Top 5 Things to do in Yellowknife

Our friends from the center of the universe, I mean Toronto, have done up a nice little post on some of the top 5 things to do when visiting Yellowknife.

Ruth Bowen, a Toronto Star freelance writer, wrote about Yellowknife as she experienced it and categorized her article by her top five things. Those categories include five things for free, five ways to see the aurora, five other things to do, five places to shop and five places to eat.

I think Ms. Bowen did a fine job at capturing some of the best in Yellowknife. Below is an example of one of the categories and all of them can be found here.

FIVE THINGS FOR FREE

Northern Frontier Visitors Centre: Starting point for self-guided walks and info on upcoming events as well as displays on diamond mining and the area’s flora…

Buffalo Airways: Meet the heroes from reality TV’s Ice Pilots and sit in the cockpit of an iconic DC3…

Heritage Walking Tour of Old Town: Pick up your guidebook from the visitors centre and spend a couple of hours rambling through the history of the city’s development…

Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre: Comprehensive yet compact museum includes dioramas on the relationships between people with the landscapes and animals of the North…

Artswalk: Leaflet from the visitors centre guides you around a diverse range of studios…

Now tell me Yellowknife, what are your top five in Yellowknife?

Explore Yellowknife by Snowmobile

If you ever get the chance to explore Yellowknife by snowmobile, I highly recommend it. Sure you could tour around in a vehicle, but in the winter, a snowmobile is so much neater.

You could also walk, but you can get around quicker on a snowmobile and check out all the cool attractions. If you don’t have a snowmobile or are just visiting, you maybe able to rent one.

Yellowknife has a trail system like no other to get you around the city, but it is not city regulated and the care falls on the riders, so please drive with caution. Yellowknife is also one of the few cities in the world where it is perfectly acceptable to drive a snowmobile on the roads (except for a certain part of downtown).

Yellowknife by Snowmobile

When exploring Yellowknife by snowmobile you are able to drive ride right up to what makes Yellowknife unique. Places like the well-known Yellowknife Bay Houseboats, or the docks including the bush planes on skis. See first hand what is like to see a plane on skis take off on a frozen runway or check out the fish plant, maybe even get yourself some fresh white fish.

Ski Flying

Moving away from Yellowknife Bay and Great Salve Lake you could head to Frame Lake and drive up to the outdoor skating rink out in front of City Hall. Or go down to Kam Lake and Grace Lake where you could watch dog-sledders come ago. You could then explore the recreational area of the Sandpits and while there you could watch the planes come and go from Airport.

Yellowknife by Snowmobile

There is much to do and see just within the Yellowknife city limits, but you don’t have to stay there. It is only a quick drive until you are completely outside of the city. Take an ice ager with you and try your hand at ice fishing.

Yellowknife by Snowmobile

There is still much more you can do and see within Yellowknife when traveling by snowmobile. Please share your favourites in the comment section.

UPDATE: When the Power goes out in Yellowknife

UPDATE: CBC North has reported that the power outage that occurred during the evening of February 13, 2012 was caused by a Military Helicopter striking a power line. No one was hurt, but the helicopter was damaged.

Power Outages are no surprise in Yellowknife, they have been happening for years. Whether it is a squirrel or a raven causing them, they have just always happened.

Oddly enough they always seem to happen in the evenings (not always, but most of the time), when everyone is home and at their computers.

Then as soon as it happens we all get in a tizzy and use our phones to complain about it on Twitter and Facebook. I have decided not to complain anymore. Instead I want to make the best of the dark, piece and quiet.

This time around, I stoked the fire making sure the house stayed warm and then headed outside. Although the streets around my house were very dark, some grids were still on and the light coming from them made for some cool photos.

Aurora attention out of Seattle

This is a neat find out of Seattle, Washington.

Doug Mahugh, a resident of Seattle was up in Yellowknife to see and photograph the Aurora, or as I call them, the Northern Lights.

As a non-resident, Doug remarks on what it was like seeing the Aurora and also the experience of bundling up and going out in the -30ºC
