How To Be a Yellowknifer: Annelies Pool

Annelies Pool Yellowknife

Annelies Pool, a resident of Yellowknife since the early 80’s, always knew she wanted to write a novel but knew it would take some time to get there. While working towards that goal, which she recently accomplished, she became a journalist to support herself to continue to practice the trade she loves.

In that pursuit, Annelies found herself in Hay River working for a now defunct community newspaper in the late 70’s, then in what was then called Frobisher Bay, and finally in Yellowknife where she had stayed since.

I have always felt a little out of step and the north is a place where you can be out of step with everybody else.

True to her writing roots, Annelies played a big part in building the foundation of the Northwords Writers Festival, which has seen some of Canada’s top writers and literary artists come through.

Beyond the writing, Annelies shares her love of the land that makes up the north. Having spent many years living on the Ingraham Trail and now many summer nights out at Prelude Lake she remarks how the landscape still captivates her.

There is something about this landscape that has a grip on my soul.

Now published throughout the north in various publications, Annelies is focusing on her original goal. In 2016, she published her first novel Free Love, a gripping story about one women’s journey through the recovering community of a fictional Yellowknife.

You can learn more about Free Love and Annelies Pool on her website anneliespool.ca.
