Yellowknife Street Stories – The Book, The Event, The Stories

Yellowknife is an extremely wonderful place. I grew up here and even after all these year I’m still very proud to call it home and have no plans on leaving. One of the great things about this city is the endless amounts of opportunity there are and the community that goes along with it to support those opportunities.

Over the last 6 months or so I really haven’t been putting the passion in YkOnline.ca as much as I would have liked but I had a good reason.

In the fall of 2012 I embarked on a journey that I’m really proud of. I wrote a book of stories and took photographs of many of the people who live on or frequent the streets of Yellowknife.

The reason for putting together these stories is still unclear to me but I felt as a storyteller I should help share the stories of many who aren’t often heard from. In this world we are all individuals and we all have our own stories but at the same time many of us are often not willing to hear the stories of the less fortunate.

The Book

This book changes that. It puts a name to a face and shares the stories of many different people from many different walks of life. If you read the book and all you take away is a name of a person who you might see everyday then I will know it was all worth it.

The book has been available for pre-order for a while and now that I have them here in Yellowknife I am sending and delivering them as orders come in. You can order one at ykonline.ca/book

The Event

As well as printing the book I also printed 15 amazing images that I captured of different people. They show joy, rest, passion and struggles. They will be on display at the Gallery on 47th for two days and I want to invite everyone and anyone who would like to attend. The books will also be available for purchase at this time as well, with a portion of all sales going back to the local homeless shelters.
