The Gallery Building Comes Down

Just because I’m stuck in the Vancouver Airport today doesn’t mean I don’t know what it happening in Yellowknife. After not sleeping at all last night due to a red eye flight and a 4 hour time change, I found out early this morning that the Gallery was indeed being torn down today.

The once popular bar has been around Yellowknife for sometime and I’m sure hold memories for some… if they can even remember them. The bar and above ground levels have been unoccupied for a couple years now and Frostbyte Cafe as the last establishment to move out about a year ago after some serious flooding.

Thanks to the support of Facebook Fans and Twitter Followers, YkOnline was able to get the following photos. They can all be seen at http://Facebook.com/YkOnline

  • Lucilles it was, just before Frostbyte. I heard they just didn't get a whole lot of business.

Never knew the Gallery, (for obvious reasons) but for me it was nights of Halo and bawls at Frostbyte and numerous rehearsals and workshops on the 3rd floor Actors Studio. I'm curious to see what they use the lot for, anyone know?
If they opt for another parking lot over greenspace or local business I'm going to freak.

  • One of my more memorable nights at The Gallery was spent watching the O.J. Simpson car chase on the TVs there.

@Allomer My understanding is that the feds are building an office for INAC staff there.

  • Used to love open mic night there, always good to sing with a live band! birthday beers and saturday nights, you'll be missed Gallery

    Same with the Cave!!

Indeed, Dundee REIT (aka Bellanca Developments) is putting up a building for INAC. Pretty sure its 6 floors

  • Like Allomer I never had the pleasure of going into The Gallery, because of age. I always thought the building looked as though it was about to fall down.
I was being told a story about a couple who had meet at The Gallery… in 1979 and even then it looked old. Apart of the old Yellowknife is now gone.

I also heard on the Radio that the new building, for INAC, will be 5 floors.

  • Yes we do remember the Gallery as we owned the Bar along with Gordie and Barb Weatherby, Mike and Delrose Stevens and Dennis Bergeron. There were some great times had there. We only owned it for a few yearsand sold it to Sam Yurkiw. We remember it when it was owned by the Searle's and it was called the Steak House. We had some great waitresses work for us. We started Happy Hour. It was from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Later on customers would come there around 4:00 so they could get a seat Ron and Clara Sulz Kelowna B.C.

    • Ron I remember when you guys bought The Gallery Steakhouse. When David Searle owned it I worked as a bartender there. Gladys Coffin was the manager. We had quite a few different entertainment groups in mostly from Edmonton. Exotic dancers hired from Greene’s Artests (Myrna & Bob Greene. Very enjoyable.
