Last night, at City Hall, all the candidates piled into the council chambers for a pretend meeting. They were split up into three different councils as obviously they wouldn’t all fit into one sitting.
I have been to council meetings before and actually enjoy going oddly enough and this was one of the first times I actually had trouble finding a seating in the 70’s style chamber. I shouldn’t have been surprised it was packed and I’m sure the majority of the people in there were just other candidates.
Unfortunately I was only there for the second sitting but I was intrigued as the candidates in that sitting were all first time candidates with the exception of Shelagh Montgomery. It was fresh to hear some different opinions and see how they responded to the discussion.
Were you there? Do you have something to say about the mock council? Even if you weren’t there, do you have something to say about the candidates running? Please share it in the comment section.
I was at the mock council meeting, I stayed for the entire thing. I enjoyed it, even though the topics were not exact motions that council will be faced with when they reconvene, it was a good opportunity to see everyone’s personalities, debate skills and see who did not do their homework into the topics.
A few of the candidates really surpised me with their amount of knowledge on some topics and others thought they could just talk around the issue and ended up sounding clueless. I don’t want to share names before the election, but I am sure those who were there for first and third motion know who I am talking about.
The second motion was handled very well, there was a varied amount of interest / support for the Womens In Cities initiative, severla amendments were put forth but then quashed during the vote. It was an interesting topic and I appreciated the wide range of mindsets in the group for it.
The topic that most interested me was the thrid motion, for affordable housing. While a few of the council members leaned towards the “we have a study in progress so squash this motion” defense, I wish Alt North had worded the motion differently to receive better feedback.
