Intersection Road Jams

I have talked about the roads and parking lots in Yellowknife before but it is time to revisit it once again. Although the construction has been happening for some time now I thought I would bring the topic to the table again.

As you know and most likely have seen there is a new entrance going into the new plaza at the corner of Old Airport Road and Range Lake Road. It is going in between the intersection and the Tim Horton’s exit.

Now obviously because of the construction the 2 lane road has gone down to 1 and caused major back ups at 5pm, but that is just something we live with. What I do want to know is how you think this new entrance will affect the flow of traffic will be on Old Airport Road. Do you think it is a good decision to have this new entrance. I am sure we could also discuss the issue of parking within the plaza property but that might be for another time.

Here are some picture of the construction from a week or so ago:

  • I think the Wal-Mart parking lot is a nightmare with traffic zig zagging every where. The old Petro Canada Gas Station needs to be demolished and taken out of the way and actual traffic lanes established.

    • Finally, with the removal of the old abandoned Petro Canada station the Wal-Mart/Tim Hortons parking lot is actualy starting to resemble a parking lot!

  • It would be nice to see them rework the Tim Hortons/Walmart parking lot & traffic flow, joining it into the new plaza would be great, but different owners, shared liability, insurance details, probably won’t happen.

Having the old gas station still sitting dormant in the way doesn’t help either. There should be regulation that keeps the previous operators (Petro?) responsible for pulling the tanks out and cleaning the area up.

  • When are the owners or the city going to remove that abandoned Petro-Canada service station that is stuck in the middle of the Wal Mart/Tim Hortons parking lot??

  • Regulations require expensive clean-ups if oil or gas spilled… one wonders why PetroCan station owners have not been forced to do do tests and any necessary cleanup…
    Who’s friends are they?
If they don’t do clean-up… who will end up paying?
I bet Mr & Mrs Yk taxpayer will!
Too bad Yellowknife has no investigative business journalists, just regurgitators of business propaganda.
