I am sure you are probably wondering what a Tweetup is. I will explain, because it is actually rather simple. A tweetup is just a meet up of people and businesses who are on or want to be on Twitter. Now before you judge Twitter here me out. Twitter is not just another social networking site for your kids. It can be a networking tool for your business, among other things. That is why I encourage anyone who is the least bit interested in Twitter to come out to the YZFTweetup.
The Tweetup will be happening on October 8th, 2009 at 7pm at Javaroma Coffee Shop on main street in the Northwestel Building. Feel free to drop by and say hi and find out more about Twitter. I am hoping one of the topics that we might talk about is how the City can use Twitter and Facebook.
If you are already on Twitter RSVP here http://twtvite.com/1nnfqa
*note: If you are on twitter the hashtag (#) for the Tweetup is #yzftweetup.

Hey, Yellowknife #yzf while lying in bed because I’m lazy I was checking Twitter on my ipod and I saw an new and interesting account worth checking out. @NWTers . The account led me back to their site http://nwters.com which appears to be a feed or aggregator of some NWT Twitter accounts such as @cbcnorth and @upheremag as well as our hashtags #yzf #yellowknife #x1a.
This is something I wanted to do a while ago but was to busy and quite frankly I couldn’t figure out how to make it and look fancy at the same time. I think is a great new site and I will definitely be visiting regularly. As I’m very interested in the site I had to dig a little deep to see if I could find out who created it. Whois check it was. I found out local Yellowknifer @bradpoulter, who I have yet to have the pleasure of meeting created the site. If you want to show your support send a thanks his way via twitter.

Even though it is a day late, here is this weeks Blogger Profile. Our blogger this week is Nancy the Money Coach, who is one of the leading forces of our social media club here in Yellowknife. She is all for Web 2.0 and Gov 2.0 and will do great things for Yellowknife. Check out here profile below.

Who are you?
#42. No wait. Sorry that’s the meaning of life.
Who am I? pop by my blog, hang out a while, and you’ll find out.
Where do you blog?
I hope one day soon I shall be blogging again from Javaroma, but for now I’m blogging from home.
Why do you blog?
I started blogging because it was a much less expensive form of marketing than print — and I got more business! But even though I’m on sabbatical from my money-coaching business, I’m still blogging for several reasons:
What is the best part of blogging? …Or worst?
I love the interaction with people from all over the world. My global awareness and access to new ideas has skyrocketed since blogging. The worst part is sometimes the best, too: the Tech (serious geek) side. I get frustrated not being able to make my blog look as nice as I want, but on the other hand, peer-to-peer collaborative events like #yzfbarcamp are a lot of fun, and I really enjoy learning those geeky bits.
Who do you write for? Yourself? Your Readers? Google? For a living?
Well, for the world. Seriously. My blogging is giving fuel, in my own little way, to this brave new world of social media. It’s almost like this parallel universe, and I want that universe to be as vibrant and colourful and engaging as possible. I hope I’m contributing to that.
You are known as the Money Coach, how did that come to be?
For the past several years I had my own business helping people manage their money – spend appropriately, get out of debt, create budgets, save, define for themselves what is important to spend money on, and what is a waste for them. I loved my work, but I needed a break. It will resurrect though! And in the meantime, I still like blogging, and tweeting about the topic.
Do you or would you ever censor yourself?
There’s always the tension of voicing opinions and having personality yet writing with diplomacy and respect for others’ sensitivities. This was more acute when I was blogging in part to attract and engage clients. I had to decide that I was going to show my political stripes (green) and that I’m religious (high Anglican) even if it cost me readers and business. In that way, blogging forces intention and integrity. So I don’t think I “censor” myself, per se, but I do care about my readers and I care about my opinions and integrity, and both shape what I choose to write.
PC or Mac?
Mac. ’nuff said.
Blogs you read or would recommend?
Well I’m sure enjoying all the blogs up here in the NWT.
I’m increasingly interested in Canada’s public policy about the web – it’s being created right now, and what you and I say and think about it matters – so I am spending more time reading blogs like Eaves, MichaelGeist, and CPSR. There are many more!
Are you originally from Yellowknife? Or what made you decide to move here?
Yep, born and grew up here.

First off I want to know how Tim from the Newspaper found out about what we were doing. He’s not on Twitter. Does anyone know?
Yellowknife’s first TweetUp finally happened earlier this afternoon. The turn out was good, somewhere 15 people attended. It was nice to put handles to faces. It seems for the most part all of us have very similar interests, which kept the conversation very lively.
Now more than ever the buzz about the barcamp is in the air. Although this tweetup was based upon Twitter the general topic was Social Media itself. Which was great.
Here are some photos of the day. If you have photos of the even that you put up on Flickr make sure to add a yzftweetup add so everyone can see the pictures.

It seems like the hype about Twitter is hitting Yellowknife now. Everyday 1 or 2 more users are signing up and starting to get in to this exciting social networking site. Slowly the #yzf Twitter community grows.
A couple things to go over for some of you who are new to Twitter or haven’t even signed up yet.
Here on Yellowknife Online we have a page dedicated to all things Twitter Yellowknife, on the page you will find a Yk Tweeps Directory and a link to the form to get on the directory. As well as a yzf hashtag(#) directory, because as the local use of twitter grows so does the need to define what you are referring to. More will be added as the community grows. The last thing you will find on that page is the #yzf feed. #yzf is the main hashtag for Yellowknife and it is nice to see what people are saying about our town.
Yellowknife is going to have its first Tweetup. A Tweetup is a gathering of everybody on Twitter in the area. It is a chance to meet and get to know the people you talk to online. At this piont anyone is welcome to join us at the #yzftweetup even if you are not on Twitter yet. To RSVP go to the event found here on FaceBook or go to the Twtvite event page and use your Twitter username. If you happen to mention anything to do with the tweetup make sure to use this hashtag: #yzftweetup
Twitter will a be a topic that will be covered here often, so you might as well join now.
*Note: A Links page was also added to the site. The page is filled up with Yk and Non-Yk Blogs as well as a Yellowknife Links. If you have a blog or link and want it on the Links page or if you think your link is in the wrong place please contact me through the contact page.

Good Afternoon kind folk of Yellowknife.
I am writing post not only to inform you but also to congratulate Yummy or Yummy’s (the little reasonably priced place to eat in the old Polar Parkas building, was in the Yellowknifer a while back) on joining Twitter. As of now it seems they will be posting up there daily specials and what not. I am hoping they become a valued member of out #yzf community.
It also appears that they are working on there website which I’m happy to say is a Wordpress site (Its not like I’m a Wordpress guru or anything). I hope they come up with ideas such as the ones I had in my Coffee Shop Online article. It would be great to see this little business taking the lead in Social Networking here in Yellowknife.
Check them out on Twitter [HERE] and make sure you follow them. Here is the link to their website www.yummynwt.ca

Social Media and Networking in Yellowknife is slowly growing, whether it be on Twitter, Facebook or NWT Blogs. The momentum is there and we are heading on up the hill chanting “yes we can, yes we can”
With the online community of Yellowknife growing the events are close behind. The Yellowknife Bloggers from NWTBlogs have already held 3 meet ups. While a “yktweetup” may be in the near future. These events are a wonderful experience to put a face to the handles of the people you interact with on a daily bases.
While to those just coming for the party don’t find it a lot of work, it may be a different story for the host. Will people like it, is the place clean, is the food any good, etc. Therefore I have found a simple How-to Guide to throwing a Social Media Shin Dig: HOW TO: Plan and Promote Events With Social Media
If you are a Social Media Guru why not check out Yellowknife’s Social Media Club on Facebook
