Aurora attention out of Seattle

This is a neat find out of Seattle, Washington.

Doug Mahugh, a resident of Seattle was up in Yellowknife to see and photograph the Aurora, or as I call them, the Northern Lights.

As a non-resident, Doug remarks on what it was like seeing the Aurora and also the experience of bundling up and going out in the -30ºC

Interview with Sam of Evaporating Water YouTube Video

As you know a local Yellowknifer has gone viral on YouTube because of her video of her throwing boiling water into cold Yellowknife air. Her video on YouTube is about to pass 1 million views.

I was able to email Samantha this morning and ask her some questions about the video:

What is the story behind why you made the video?

A couple of friends from Australia were visiting me in Yellowknife over Christmas in December 2009.  I had heard about this experiment from a friend and had wanted to try it out.  I knew it would be “cool”, so I had them record the experiment to get their reaction so we’d have something to share to our friends.

How long and have many views did the video have before it started to go viral?

A couple of friends from Australia were visiting me in Yellowknife over Christmas in December 2009. I posted this video just after their visit on You Tube and, until now, it only had about 25,000 hits.

How long did it take to go viral?

In the past five days it has skyrocketed to currently 850,000 views on You Tube alone!  I’m blown away at how this has picked up worldwide and gone viral. Everyday I receive hundreds of comments on the video, messages, tweets, retweets and hear of websites and blogs it’s been embedded on. It’s been featured everywhere…it’s just amazing.

You said it first went viral in India, any idea why?

My thoughts on India is it was embedded on a website there and gas just taken off. They’ve been really active about tweeting it etc.
The top ten countries where this has been viewed in the last week have been India, United States, Pakistan, Canada, UK, United Arab Emirates, Sweden, Australia, Singapore and New Zealand.

Now that your one video has become viral, do you plan on making any others?

I am actually looking forward to creating a few video responses and keep this buzz going.  Science is a wonderful world…now that I have their attention, imagine how they would react to seeing Aurora images, or the northern lights dancing in the sky!

The video is almost at 1 million views and has been featured on blogs all over, how does this make you feel?

I can’t believe it’s about to hit one million! I’m really excited about this and  will be adding this to my resume for sure!  I couldn’t have done it without the help of my Aussie friend Kristen though. As she would say “that’s amazing!”

Any other comments?

To solve the debate on whether it’s evaporating or freezing, it’s called the Mpemba Effect (where hot water freezes faster than cold). When the water vapors freeze, it turns into ice crystals and “evaporates” because of the dry air we have in the north. If the air was more humid, it would stay in the air longer.  The same effect happens behind airplanes (contrails or condensation trails).  It’s a cool trick and I hope people try it at home.

Yellowknife Lunar Eclipse

Monday night we got the treat of seeing the Lunar Eclipse where the Earth comes between the Sun and Moon. The Earths shadow started to cover the moon about 11:30pm and completely covered shadowed the moon by 12:30pm.

Yellowknife was gifted with a perfect show, with no clouds in sight. Many resident watched and captured the moment. Apparently the Dettah Ice Road was packed with spectators, as well as up on Pilots Monument. As for my, my front porch was a just fine.

Where do you rent a Canoe or Kayak in Yellowknife?

I have seen the question come up a few times this summer, most recently earlier this week. Where can someone rent a canoe or kayak in Yellowknife?

Well, there are two different places, that I know of. Both are locally owned and operated and I trust both equally. Ironically the price to rent from both places is the same, so in my opinion it doesn’t matter which one you go to. The only deciding factor might be who has what available.

The first is Narwal Adventures, they are located down on back bay and you could easily launch into the water right from their front yard. The second place is Overlander Sports and they are considered the all-in-one sports shop for Yellowknife. They provider equipment for almost every sport out there. They are located in downtown Yellowknife and have been in business for over 25 years, all 25 owned and operated by the same people.

Like I mentioned in the show, Yellowknife is surrounded by many lakes perfect for taking a paddle, but be safe. There are also some routes for the more adventurous ones. According to websites, canoe and kayak rentals start at $45/day and go up from there to 7 day for $200.

All that and more information you’ll want to hear in episode 15 of Yk Quick Tips. Remember to subscribe via iTunes and send in your Yellowknife related question to info@ykonline.ca

Folk on the Rocks is the topic of episode 8 of Yk Quick Tips. I talk about some general info about this festival.

If you don’t know by now, Folk on the Rocks, is Yellowknife’s biggest Folk Festival. It was started 30 years ago on the shore of Frame Lake and then moved to the shore of Long Lake, where it remains today.

It now has its own properly, still on the shore of Long Lake, just off Highway 3, past the Airport. With in the festival grounds there are 6 stages in total. One main stage, a right and left stage, the beer garden stage, a culture and children’s stage. The Festival is normally over a weekend in July and features over 24 hours of music and entertainment.

When Folk on the Rocks is on, the town becomes alive. There is so much energy just bursting through the streets. Along with what happens at the main site, local bars have pre-shows. Musicians from all across Canada come to play at Folk on the Rocks. Past artist include Tegan & Sara, Sam Roberts and Leila Gilday.

Bush Pilots Monument is the topic for Episode 6 of Yellowknife Quick Tips and we have all you need to know about this local attraction.

Pilots Monument

Bush Pilots Monument, or just Pilots Monument like I normally refer to it, is a local monument honoring the bush pilots of today and yesterday, who helped open up the north to the rest of Canada. For a long time there was no road into Yellowknife and even before there even was a Yellowknife, Bush Pilots would make the trip in to a vast land of nothingness searching for adventure. Once Yellowknife did start to grow though, bush planes became a vital source for transportation of people, food, supplies and vehicles. Although Yellowknife did get regular barges in the summer months, planes where available year round and are always coming and going.

Today the monument sits up top “The Rock”, a six-story rock hill in the centre of old town. To get to the monument follow Franklin Ave down into Old Town, turn left onto Wiley Rd and the right on to Ingraham Dr, which will take you part way up the hill to the parking lot. Once you are in the parking lot, park your vehicle. A sign at the beginning of the stairs will great you, which has the name of the monument and some information about commemorating 100 years of aviation.  As you make your way up the stairs there are a couple different resting areas. Chances are the average person won’t need them, it only took me 30 seconds to walk up, but if you want to take your time they are there. The view is amazing on the way up as well.

At the top of “The Rock” you will see 2 different platforms, one being the deck attached to the stairs. The other being the actual monument, which is made from concrete. The monument has a plaque explaining it significants and certification. There are so other plaques at the top, one about “The Rock” itself and the other about Jolliffe Island.

Look at the view. Look at how vast the land is and how there is really nothing out there. The view from the top gives you a great panorama of what is going on around the shore of Yellowknife Bay. The  city skyline is also one of my favorites. This spot is popular place for landscape photos and portraits.

Pilots Monument

I would encourage anyone who is visiting town or lives here to try and make it to pilots monument. To view the Live Webcam click here and the weather station Rallarvegen.com/Monument

2010 Trade Show – Day 2

The final and second day of the 2010 Yellowknife Trade Show brought more great exposure for Yellowknife Businesses. Although the start of the morning was much slower than Saturday, by mid day the Multiplex was alive with people. I feel good about the exposure we got, but two full days at the Multiplex really takes a lot out of a person.

So keeping it short I want to send out a thanks to the Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce and sponsors for putting on another great show. As spectators, what did you think of this years Trade Show? We’d love to get your feedback!

YkOnline.ca will be at the Trade Show

May 5, 2010, marks YkOnline.ca’s 1 year anniversary. One of our first posts was about last years Trade Show. It was fun to walk around and see everyone having a good time. I had a chance to meet many people there and since then. With out the support and acceptance of Yellowknife I don’t think YkOnline could be what it is today.

I am hoping we continue to grown and become a place where residents and tourist alike come to find out informative and intriguing information about Yellowknife. Because we want to get out in to the community more, this year we have decided to set up a booth at the Trade Show. We will be in booth #32, which is along the right hand wall as you walk into the Shorty Brown Arena of the Multiplex.

We wont have much, we don’t have any fancy products to show off. We will have little cards that give new readers an idea about what we have, a monitor displaying the website and, of course, myself. We were going to have a draw for an iPad, but I couldn’t bring anymore back from the US and quite frankly I don’t have that kind of money.

In addition to spreading the word about YkOnline, we will also be live streaming the event. As of now, we will only have a static camera at our booth, but we may break out the mobile pack. The live stream or webcast will be playing the entire time the Trade Show is open. To watch you can go to http://ykonline.ca/live.

I’m sure I’ll be tweeting and writing while there as well.

I hope to meet many new people at the show, as well as see some old faces. See you all there.

For the third episode of Yk Quick Tips we talk about Yellowknife’s Spring Trade Show.

The Yellowknife Spring Trade Show, or Yellowknife’s Greatest Indoor Show, or the Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce Trade Show, is an annual trade show put on by the Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce. It has taken place for about 3 decades and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down, as there are many growing and expanding businesses within Yellowknife wanting to show their stuff.

I have always enjoyed going to the trade show. It gives me a chance to see businesses up close and personal. It is a place where you can meet and connect with those who not only have booths, but those who are just walking around looking.

Once the Multiplex was complete, the trade show moved to that facility and uses both arenas and the DND gym. One arena for the Business Booths and one for the Boat and Auto Show, while the gym is set up for non-profit community groups. Admission is normally $5 per-person a day and $15 per-family a day. For more on the trade show see our YkOnline Page: http://ykonline.ca/trade-show

That and more as I talk about what the Trade Show is all about in episode three of Yk Quick Tips. Have any questions or feedback? Leave us a comment or send us an e-mail to info@ykonline.ca
