In this weeks episode, we listen to a couple songs by Yellowknife’s own Giant Con and Hello Paisley. The reason for this is because both bands will be playing at the torch ceremony happening on Nov. 5. There will also be some more performances happening at Javaroma on the same night. So once you get your fill down at city hall, head inside for a warm drink.

We also talk about the concert happening at NACC this coming Thursday. All the proceeds from this concert will go to help find a beat breast cancer.

The Fog in Yellowknife and the Javaroma WiFi were among other things on topic. All that and more.

See you all next week.

This morning I sent out a message saying that Javaroma WiFi was back. At the time I had no idea how truthful that was so I wanted to check for myself.

Upon arriving at Javaroma just after lunch I was greeted by the manager, who I knew. I asked him if the rumors were true, was WiFi really back. Sure enough he said with a smile, it was. My next question was the one I cared about more, price. Months ago when WiFi was first taken out I suggested that they charge for it to discourage people from abusing the service, later I changed my outlook. The proper way to do it would be to continue offering the service for free but with limitations. Such as no downloading.

Well that is exactly what Javaroma has now done. Now, I unfortunately didn’t stay long enough to test it out, but was told that there would be no downloading only browsing online. Which is fine by me, what ever keeps the costs down while making customers happy.

So Yellowknifers who enjoy getting out of the office or house to do some relaxing internet browsing you are once again able to.

Are you going to take advantage of the free WiFi? Well if you do, I’ll see you there!

Javaroma, the coffee shop that is located in the Northwestel Building, has finally sold. Adrian Bell the former owner had it for sale for some time and finally managed to sell it. As of September 1, 2009 Rami Kassem and Fadil Memedi, a former driver and owner of City Cabs, took over the store. They say they do not plan on changing much, only adding a few personal touches. Such as new food items as well as sprucing the place up a bit. Both men should have no problem running this hot spot as both have background in business operations and running restaurants.

From what I can tell this means only good things for the customers. New food menu, cleaner store and better atmosphere. What I am hoping for is that they bring back the WiFi whether it is free or not. Yellowknife is in desperate need of more WiFi Hot Spots and Javaroma is a prime location.

What are you thoughts, Yellowknife. What do you want to see change, or not change? What new things would you like to see at the store? Share for all to see.

You can read a full article on the sale in the Sept, 9th Yellowknifer.

Well it seems like I have received enough questions on twitter that I should put up a post about it.

Yellowknife’s Greatest Indoor show will be this weekend. May 9, 10 2009. It is put on by Yellowknife’s Chamber of Commerce. It is Yellowknife’s biggest (possible only) trade show. It will feature businesses from all around town as well as some from Edmonton and the south. It will be held in the Multiplex Arena. On one rink there will be business booths as well as the food court and on the other normally Force One and Chrysler take it over.As the chatter of the show picks up I’m starting to here about all of the great business’s and people that will be there this year. You can find out more on the Chambers Website.

Now I remember maybe not last year but definitely the year before Northwest Tel set up an area with nice big couches and free WiFi and I have yet to find out if they will be doing this again but I think it would be a great add on to the show. Although I do remember last summer as I was often in the arena at the indoor skate-park there being WiFi in there being broadcast by the City. I’m hoping it is still available as it would be nice to blog about this event while there. I plan to try and investigate be for hand.

On the note of Internet I will also be Tweeting what is going on with or without the Internet while I’m there and I thought this might be an excellent opportunity for a very casual first YkTweetUp. Chances are we will all go to the Show sometime over the weekend, so why not coordinate a time so we can all put faces to handles? I plan to be at the show from about 12 noon on Saturday into the afternoon sometime. Use the hashtag #yktweetup so I know who to look for or @the_bushman me.

I hope to see you all there. I plan on taking some photos and making a post either during or after the event.

I was recently informed by Nancy via Twitter that Javaroma has canceled their free Internet Access because of a $700 Internet bill they received. I can’t say I’m surprised that they got the bill, it was bound to happen. What really shocks me is how it only happened now. They have had free Wifi there for years and surely people have taken advantage of it before and downloaded that big file or movie.

What I really don’t understand is why they are not looking in to their options. There are many Internet Cafe/ WiFi Hot Spot solutions out there. Look at Starbucks, they are partnered with AT&T, Boingo and others to provide WiFi access at almost every shop across North American. That’s a damn lot of Coffee Shops so surely our one Javaroma can come up with some sort of solution. If you Google “Internet Cafe Software” instantly you find several companies that offer software that can be used to regulate users Internet usage. I am also willing to bet if a small fee was tacked on to being able to use the Internet, people wouldn’t mind. I mean if they are spending $6 on a coffee, $5 for a hour or day of Internet shouldn’t be a big deal. Am I not right?

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think they are going in the wrong direction in this online era? Should they charge for Internet use? Let everyone know in the comments below.
