Skills NWT 2010

This is just a quick note informing everyone that the Skills NWT Competition will be happening today, April 20, 2010, at Sir John High School, KCTC, and St. Pats High School.

Only having just got back to town and having to attend Skills are more or less the reasons for the lack up updates going on over here. That being said, I will be at Skills tomorrow filming the event and will later post a recap of the event.

If you find yourself looking for something to do today, I urge you to head to one of the sites and watch the competitions. Trades is a large part of our economy here in Yellowknife and the NWT, so show your support. The competitions will be taking place between 9am – 4pm and the awards ceremonies will be at 6pm at the Tree of Peace.

Challenge Cup – St Pats Victory

Another Challenge Cup between the two local High Schools, Sir John Franklin and St. Patrick High School, is over. This years Challenge was a St Pat’s victory all around. I will give you a run down of how the afternoon went. The girls teams face off first for 2 periods starting at 1pm and then afterwords the guys go head to head for a rough and tumble game.

This year it seems that St. Pat’s teams were both on their “A” game, winning both of them. The girls team took a 3 goal lead and kept it, winning the game 4-1. As for the guys team, once they got a 3 goal lead, well they just kept going. The final scored ended up being 7-1.

Being a graduated Falcon it is hard to see Blue and Yellow take a hit like this but I know that both teams did their best and definite entertained the crowd. Congratulations to both teams, and hat tip as well to St. Pats for the victories.

I did not have a camera as it was a spur of the moment decision. If you have any photos please link to them in the comments.

Saturday Nov 14 Events

Tomorrow is a day full of community events so I hope you can make it out to at least one.

Starting in the morning is the annual Elks Craft Show. The show starts at 10am and goes until 2pm, my suggestion would be to get just after 10am to see all the great stuff the people of Yellowknife has to offer. Lots of home made stuff, from clothing to preserves to northern art work. It is always neat to see what everyone has, even if you don’t buy anything.

After you got your fix at the craft sale head over to the Yk Co-op for CJCD’s annual Stuff the Bus fundraiser. They will attempt, with the support of Yellowknifers, to Stuff a Frontier Coach Line bus, literally with food donations. Although the aim is to stuff a bus with food donations, they will also be accepting cash donations. All food donations will be split 50/50 between the Yellowknife Food Bank and the Salvation Army. The day will be filled with fun and laughter as CJCD will be live on location in the bus from 9am to 5pm.

Ending off a busy day out and about Yellowknife can always be done with entertainment. That being said take the family to see the final performance of Charlie & the Great Glass Elevator put on by Sir John Franklin High School’s drama students. Every year the students work very hard to put on these performances and I’m sure this year will be no different. To top of there own performance they will be doing a tribute to Michael Jackson.

Have a fun day. I will be wandering around from event to event, I hope to see some of you. If there is something going on that I forgot to mention, please post it below in the comments.
