The show will contain info about what to do while visiting, things to know about moving to the City and everything else interesting about Yellowknife.

Folk on the Rocks is the topic of episode 8 of Yk Quick Tips. I talk about some general info about this festival.

If you don’t know by now, Folk on the Rocks, is Yellowknife’s biggest Folk Festival. It was started 30 years ago on the shore of Frame Lake and then moved to the shore of Long Lake, where it remains today.

It now has its own properly, still on the shore of Long Lake, just off Highway 3, past the Airport. With in the festival grounds there are 6 stages in total. One main stage, a right and left stage, the beer garden stage, a culture and children’s stage. The Festival is normally over a weekend in July and features over 24 hours of music and entertainment.

When Folk on the Rocks is on, the town becomes alive. There is so much energy just bursting through the streets. Along with what happens at the main site, local bars have pre-shows. Musicians from all across Canada come to play at Folk on the Rocks. Past artist include Tegan & Sara, Sam Roberts and Leila Gilday.

YKQT 05 – Caribou Carnival

Yk Quick Tips is your guide to Yellowknife, NT. Whether you are moving to the city or just visiting, we can offer information about all the best things. The show will contain information about what to do while visiting, things to know about moving to the City and everything else interesting about Yellowknife.

This week is all about a 55-year-old celebration we call Caribou Carnival

Caribou Carnival has been around since 1955. It originally started as a gathering of trappers at the end of the season. Over the years the carnival turned into a celebration of spring. The carnival progressed from being down on Yellowknife Bay, on to Frame Lake and most recently in the Civic Plaza beside city hall

The event, which takes place over 3 days, starting at noon on a Friday and going until Sunday, normally has something for everyone. Up until 2007 the event, which was on Frame Lake at the time, had many tents and stages, where exhibitors setup with games and goodies. A common attraction was always the Snow Stage where many games, like log sawing, tent building and tea boiling took place. The infamous Sugar Shack is also a big attraction for the event, and holds a sweet spot in everyone’s heart.

During the same weekend as the carnival and working with the carnival is the Diavik 150 Dog Derby. It also started in 1955 along with the carnival. The 150 mile race expands over the 3 days starting each day at 1pm. The race would take dog racers, from around the north, from Frame Lake, down on to back Bay of Great Slave Lake, out to Dettah and then back. The musher with the fastest combined time would win.

Unfortunately Caribou Carnival has had a rough go the past 4 years. The event slowly withered down, and lost interest for many. During the 2008 year, the carnival nearly vanished due to Arctic Winter Games being in town at the same time. Luckily 2010 brought hope. With a new president, VP and board, the 2010 Carnival took a different approach which was a success. The carnival that once was, will be again.

Learn all this and more in episode 5 of Yellowknife Quick Tips. Remember, if you have a question you need answered or an idea for a tip, send them in to info@ykonline.ca

YKQT 01 – Driving to Yellowknife

Yk Quick Tips is your guide to Yellowknife, NT. Whether you are moving to the city or just visiting, we can offer information about all the best things. The show will contain information about what to do while visiting, things to know about moving to the City and everything else interesting about Yellowknife.

For the first episode of Yellowknife Quick Tips I thought it would be appropriate to talk about how to get to Yellowknife. So, this episode is about driving to Yellowknife.

We start off in Edmonton, Alberta, as it is a good, known, starting point for your journey north. As we leave Edmonton, Kyle talks about some of the towns you will encounter in Alberta while heading north and little tidbits about them. Information like Gas Stations, Motels and Dairy Queens.

When we get to High Level we learn that after this little town there isn’t much else until Yellowknife, amenities wise. We lose cell service, and fast food joints. As we travel the road into the NWT, Kyle enlightens us about some of the tourist information and attractions that can be seen. Like the border visitor centre and Alexandria Falls, which are a must while driving up in the summer.

A key sign that you’re on your finally leg of your drive is the Mackenzie River. In the summer you’ll have the pleasure of a ride on the Merv Hardie or in the winter a stroll on the Ice Bridge. Once past Fort Providence, be sure to watch out for the bison, they may very well be everywhere. Kyle explains about how to safely pass them if they happen to be on the side of the road.

That and more on the first episode of Yk Quick Tips. Have any questions or feedback? Leave us a comment or send us an e-mail to info@ykonline.ca

A Call to Contribution

I love Yellowknife, I don’t think there is any doubt about that when it comes to YkOnline. I love sharing with you events and information from around the City, I also try to engage you with current local issues happening in our city. Doing all this is something that takes a lot of my time, that’s not to say I don’t enjoy doing it, but it is time-consuming. I also have many more ideas for more interesting content that I wont be able to do unless I have help.

That is where you, fine citizens of Yellowknife, come in. To have you contribute to YkOnline would be a pleasure to not only me, but to all our readers as well. It would be like giving back to our community and promoting it for the world to see. You would not only be offering your insight on what is going on around Yellowknife, but also giving readers a different perspective. Although I do appreciate our local News Media, I believe a community should have a source of local information provided by locals themselves. A source where the business model is not based around making money but rather providing informative and engaging information by a group of people who are passionate about their city.

I have asked around for others to contribute to YkOnline for a little while now and a small few have offered a post on occasion. So because of that I thought it might help if I specify what some topics could be. They are as followed:

A Yellowknife History Writer – To have a weekly section where an individual writes about the birth of Yellowknife and what has happened since then would be amazing. This information is so important for our community to know, and I feel very strongly that the history of Yellowknife should be shared. Unfortunately I don’t know enough about it to be able to write them myself.

A Local Featured Business Writer – I think there are some amazing businesses in our town. I would love to see owners interviewed and advice given about what has led to success. Also, I think there should be some promotion of good deeds that our businessmen do. Another idea would be someone who would like to write about tips and struggles from their local business. This includes local restaurants, which is something I think would be a great feature for both residents and visitors.

A Few Community Event Writers – Know I know there is a handful of people that don’t miss a NACC show, concert, church event, or anything else that happens in our city. It is time that your voice is heard and you have a place to write about your experiences here. The event attendances will potentially triple if people only knew what cool stuff is going on. Or you could just add your event to the calendar by following these easy steps.

Event Coverage Writers – We all go to events around town, and a majority of us even take pictures. Having posts written about past events is something I have done off and on and I think is very valuable information. Writing a recap post is actually rather easy, after you attend an event all you have to do is type out your thoughts on the event.

A Healthy Lifestyle Writer – Living in the North means long dark winters and when I sit behind a computer all day I need healthy motivation and I know I’m not alone. Even if you don’t think you have anything to offer you probably do. If your business if focused on health, write for YkOnline and become known.

Co-hosting the YkOnline Podcast - Talking to myself is boring, not only for me, but everyone else. I’m looking for a co-host for the YkOnline podcast. The format for the show is very laid back and informal, the show should just sound like a conversation between locals that care. It would be done weekly and recorded whenever is convenient. Throughout the week an online document shared between hosts would include show topics so both parties are up on everything that will be discussed. This is something I would really like to see succeed, so if you are the least bit interested please contact me in one of the methods I mention below.

Opinion Columns – The newspaper offers readers the chance to write in and share the opinion but unfortunately they can only show so many. They also do not offer the chance for discussion. If you have an opinion about a local issue and want to share it with everyone YkOnline is the place. It is also the place for local discussion. Reading some comments can be more valuable than posts on occasion.

Local Tip Contributors - There is a lot going on around town throughout the day that sometimes we miss them. If you see something going on (ie, Car Accident, Fire, breaking news, etc.) send it in to us so everyone else knows. You can to do this four different ways: 1) Call or Text 444-0901 2) e-mail contribute@ykonline.ca 3)On Twitter @YkOnline 4) Facebook.

Although I am asking for contributors in these topics it doesn’t mean I will not accept other posts and it also doesn’t mean I will not be writing about these topics as well.

How to Contribute Posts - There are three ways of doing it. 1) Go over to the Contribute Page and copy your post into the text field there. 2) Register for you own account by going to the Register Page and then Login Here. Then you will have full access to the built-in text editor (This is the preferred method). 3)E-mail in your post to contribute@ykonline.ca.

I hope some if you consider contributing to YkOnline and promoting our fine City. If you have any questions about anything please send me an e-mail or give me a call 444-0901

All WMPN.tv Podcasts via iTunes

It is back! The YkOnline Podcast (YKOP) is in full force again discussing local issues from around town. Joining me this week is Nancy Zimmerman, a co-author here on YkOnline and Paul LeBlanc, a business owner from Vancouver.

In this Episode:

  • Nancy and Paul take on the topic of the Proroguing of Parliament. They talk about how it affects not only Yellowknife but Canada as a whole.
  • If politics isn’t your thing skip ahead to 22:45 where we bring it back to around town. We discuss the opening of Nico’s Market and how we think it will make out in Yellowknife.
  • Within the conversation about Nico’s Market we talk about the affect the ferry and ice road brings to Yellowknife.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on any of these topics.
