Old Timers Hockey Tournament

Over the weekend the “Old Timers” of Yellowknife hockey players when head to head for the Balsillie Cup. Teams from around the north and many from right here in Yellowknife came to compete at the multiplex. Games seemed to be being played on both rinks at the same time, which was nice. If one got boring, you could just jump to the other.

I paid my $10 for the day on Saturday and watched 3 games. It was definitely no World Juniors or Olympic finals game but they were fun to watch. Especially when you know most of the players from around town. I had gotten a new camera lens the day before and wanted to try it out. Unfortunately  some of the photos didn’t turn out very well, nonetheless here are some of the better ones.

Why Yellowknife should be Hockeyville 2010

Jacqueline Brasseur explains, in this video made by CBC, exactly why Yellowknife should be Kraft Hockeyville 2010. She shares her passion for the game as well as the communities passion for it. Although you can tell that Jacqueline is faithfully a St. Pats supporter, the point made in the video is that throughout the high schools and the rest of the community there is a large support for hockey.

I’m sure the majority of us who grew up in Yellowknife played at least one season of the game, I was one of them. Although I haven’t played the game officially for MANY years I still enjoy watching a local game or a, close call, Olympic Gold Medal game. I even enjoy a good game of scrimmage on the Frame Lake ice rink once and a while.

This video is a good motivator for us to once again join together and make something special happen for Yellowknife. You could also send it around to family and friend to encourage them to vote for Yellowknife as well.

Yk in Top 12 – Kraft Hockeyville 2010

Yellowknife could be Kraft Hockeyville 2010. Yellowknife has made it in to the Top 12 and we are asking for your support. Vote now, vote often.

There are 3 different ways you can vote for Yellowknife:

If Yellowknife comes away with the top spot we will win $100,000, Title and Trophy, and we’ll host a pre-season NHL game in the Short Brown Arena. If all we make is into the top 5, we will still be bringing home some goods. The 4 remaining communities in the top 5 will bring home $25,000 and a visit from CBC’s hockey night in Canada.

Yellowknife several years ago hosted CBC’s Hockey Day in Canada, which was an awesome experience when I was a kid. So lets give the kids of today’s Yellowknife the same kind of experience and get Hockeyville to Yellowknife. Voting is easy and you can vote as much as you want (except text messaging) so going now and support Yellowknife

Challenge Cup – St Pats Victory

Another Challenge Cup between the two local High Schools, Sir John Franklin and St. Patrick High School, is over. This years Challenge was a St Pat’s victory all around. I will give you a run down of how the afternoon went. The girls teams face off first for 2 periods starting at 1pm and then afterwords the guys go head to head for a rough and tumble game.

This year it seems that St. Pat’s teams were both on their “A” game, winning both of them. The girls team took a 3 goal lead and kept it, winning the game 4-1. As for the guys team, once they got a 3 goal lead, well they just kept going. The final scored ended up being 7-1.

Being a graduated Falcon it is hard to see Blue and Yellow take a hit like this but I know that both teams did their best and definite entertained the crowd. Congratulations to both teams, and hat tip as well to St. Pats for the victories.

I did not have a camera as it was a spur of the moment decision. If you have any photos please link to them in the comments.
