A Duct Tape Date

Credit: Facebook Group

Last week the newspaper did an article on two High School students who have made there graduation outfits entirely out of duck tape. I thought I would also share the story behind this and encourage everyone to vote for them.

Jensen and Gillian are two Sir John graduates this year and took the challenge of making duck tape outfits. The challenge is put on by the Duck brand, a popular duck tape maker and will award the couple with the most votes $3000 scholarships to whichever school they go to.

A day before the article came out in the paper I Facebook Messaged Gillian, one half of the couple, who answered some questions for me. Here is how it went:

Where did you initially here about the Stuck at Prom Challenge?
A group of friends and I were discussing scholarships and all essays we had been writing when someone mentioned that ducktape does has a scholarship. Immediately everyone turned to me and we looked it up right then and there, and it was decided that I was going to give it a shot.

How did you decide you wanted to compete?
As I mentioned before it was just one of those things meant for me.

What was the process like designing and building each outfit?
It was long and tedious process but a lot of fun. Every little detail like the flower corsage and boutonniere helped pull everything together. I’m really proud of the craftsmanship on the tux at a quick glance it looks, well like its not made of duck tape. I also really like the pleating on the dress. Most other contestants used plain flat ducktape as a base material for their outfits.

How many rolls of Duck Tape did you end up using?
We used 29 roles of ducktape

What is it like to wear duck tape? Is it at all comfortable?
Its not terribly uncomfortable, slightly awkward to walk around in at first but once you get used to it there’s no difference to a regular dress. Though it is slightly harder to sit down in. The only complaint I have is that it is incredibly hot. The first time Jenson tried on the full suit the first thing he said was “well now I have to learn to do the robot(dance)”

Finally, if Jenson and yourself get voted the top couple, what will you win?
First place is 3000$ for each of us and our school. all the other details can be found on the sight stuckatprom.com

Here is where they need your help. In order to win they need votes, so they are asking everyone they know to go to StuckatProm.com between June 18 and June 26 and vote for them. You’ll need a valid email address and can vote once a day. They have also created a Facebook Group, which everyone should join to show them support. You can also find more information about the contest on StuckatProm.com.

St. Pats Delivers Christmas Hampers

Yesterday I took a stroll down to the Salvation Army where I found 250 students all lined up. They were lined up from the front door of the Army all the way up the hill into the gym of St. Pats High School. They made a human chain in order to deliver the 25 hamper the school had gathered and put together. The hampers I then distibuted to local families in need over the holidays.

I have put together this video which show a little more of what was going on, as well as some photos.

Coming up on the Home Stretch

Another season of Craft Shows is now over, at least I think, and we are now in the home stretch for Christmas. Only 26 days to go, so I have you are getting your shopping done. The days are getting shorter and will continue to until December 21, so there is something else you can look forward to. Some would say so far this winter we have been blessed with nice weather, and maybe we have, depending on which way you look at it.

As there were 3 craft shows going on on Saturday, Abe Miller, Baker Centre, and at St Pats High School, I didn’t get a chance to go to them all. Although I think it would have been neat to go to the St. Pat’s one, which was put on my the Yk Guild of Arts and Craft. I did manage to go over to the Aven Manor/ Baker Centre one, where there was lots going on. Along with the craft sale, they had a silent auction going on at the Aven Manor with tons of items from all over Yellowknife. They also had the annual Senior Society raffle draw, which was a big event in itself, with the 1st prize being a diamond from Rio Tinto valued at $5000.

Below you will find some photos I happen to grab throughout the afternoon.

Challenge Cup – St Pats Victory

Another Challenge Cup between the two local High Schools, Sir John Franklin and St. Patrick High School, is over. This years Challenge was a St Pat’s victory all around. I will give you a run down of how the afternoon went. The girls teams face off first for 2 periods starting at 1pm and then afterwords the guys go head to head for a rough and tumble game.

This year it seems that St. Pat’s teams were both on their “A” game, winning both of them. The girls team took a 3 goal lead and kept it, winning the game 4-1. As for the guys team, once they got a 3 goal lead, well they just kept going. The final scored ended up being 7-1.

Being a graduated Falcon it is hard to see Blue and Yellow take a hit like this but I know that both teams did their best and definite entertained the crowd. Congratulations to both teams, and hat tip as well to St. Pats for the victories.

I did not have a camera as it was a spur of the moment decision. If you have any photos please link to them in the comments.
