Vote 4 the NWT SPCA Animal Shelter

Please register and vote everyday.  You can vote from November 15 to 26 and you get 10 votes, please help!

We need your help to be eligible for a $100 – 500,000 grant, which would go towards a new animal shelter in the community. This is much needed, and not only for Yellowknife, but for all the homeless animals across the NWT.

Please visit http://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf5887 and vote for us.  We need around 4000 votes to make the semifinals, and with your help we can get there.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Vote to help fund a new animal shelter!

Please vote at http://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf5887

The Northwest Territories is in desperate need of an animal shelter. The extreme climate here in the north along with much neglect and abuse, causes hundreds of dogs and cats to suffer and die terribly. Shooting dogs is a regular occurrence unfortunately as there is a lack of vet services and ability to control roaming dogs. The NWT SPCA is a Board of volunteers that raises money and awareness in the city of Yellowknife and in the communities of the Territory. We get many calls each month from people all over looking for help. They see starving, freezing and abandoned dogs in their community and can do very little. They look to us but we have nowhere to house them until we can find homes either here in the NWT or in the other provinces. We are desperate for this necessary northern community shelter. We plan on incorporating educational programs through school dog walking activities and promoting proper pet ownership which is somewhat lacking in certain areas of the North. Please vote for us. Please help us help the dogs and cats of the North. Our dream is for the shelter to be able to house at least 25 dogs and 15 cats in comfort. Please help us make this shelter a reality.

Freezin for a Reason 2010 Polar Plunge

If you watch the video I included in the event posting of the Polar Plunge from last year you will notice that the ice is up to the shoreline. Actually, a back hoe had to dig the ice out in order for there to be room for people to jump in. This year on the other hand, the ice was 100 feet from the shore. You could launch your boat and then drive out to the ice.

Although interesting to see the difference from last year to the current one, that was not why we were down at the Fred Henne (Long Lake) Boat Launch. We were down there for the 2nd annual Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge. The plunge is a Fundraiser for Special Olympics NWT. 49 . Over the past couple weeks teams have rounded up donations and in return plunged themselves in to the icy cold waters of Long Lake. 49 people (granted I counted correctly) took the plunge and did it for a good cause.

An awards ceremony and BBQ was held after the plunge for those who stuck around. Thanks to Roxanne Dreilich and the RCMP for organizing an excellent event. Could you bear the cold? Would you have taken the plunge?

The Vagina Monologues

As I’m currently out of Yellowknife and not able to get Internet all that often, I have been unable to keep up with the happenings of our fine city. That being said below in some information about the Vagina Monologues.

This Thursday, April 8th, The Vagina Monologues will open at The Top Knight. This is the second year that VDAY North, a campaign to stop violence against women, has produced The Vagina Monologues. Last year, VDAY North opened to rave revues and raised over $10,000, 90% of which went to the Alison McAteer House and the Centre for Northern Families. This year, VDAY North hopes to beat that goal.

The Vagina Monologues is part of an international campaign, but the organizers see this production as a creative way to address a local problem: high rates of violence against women in the North. The play features stories and scenes from women of diverse backgrounds, discussing what it is to be a woman. The play ranges from the hilarious to the tragic. “The Vagina Monologues breaks the silence: it’s creative and entertaining, but we also hope it will inspire dialogue in the Yellowknife community,” says director, Rebecca Hall.

Like last year, this year 90% of the funds will go to the Alison McAteer House and the Centre for Northern Families. The other 10% will go to a hospital in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that is treating women who have been a victim of war and genital mutilation. VDAY North joins with VDAY campaigns all around the world in supporting this hospital.

The Vagina Monologues will run from April 8th to 10th at 8 pm at The Top Knight. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased through yktix and Birchwood Galleries.
