Ferry Causes a Fuel Issue

It is not often anymore that the Ferry goes out unexpectedly, but when it does, we go on edge. Most of the time Yellowknife has enough supplies to get by, but when rumours of panic start floating around town, we all panic.

The Yellowknifer and CBC both did articles on panic to get fuel as the ferry is currently out, but I’m curious to know where the panic came from. Many people were saying that the scare started on Facebook and then spread through town.

The GNWT released a statement on the matter saying that if resident consumed fuel at a normal rate, everyone would have enough to get through while the ferry is out. Now I realize that this is hard to take in, especially when you know other people are out there filling jerry cans in the back of Ford Fusions. By the way apparently Ford Fusions are actually fairly efficient. Anyways, I think it is a little late for that though.

According to some friends, Co-op is out of fuel, Winks was low of the last bit of Premium, Petro-Can had line ups and Gas Town was limiting fuel ups to $40. No word on any of the other stations or card locks. Please comment with updated info.

As for food, Co-op has been flying food over from Hay River and will continue to do so until the Ferry reopens. As for Extra Foods, they’re shelves are starting to look bare.

The water levels are now on the rise again, and if they continue at the rate they are going, it is predicted that the ferry will be in operations by the end of the week.

Most long time Yellowknifers see this as no issue, and just go on with life and deal with it. While, I’m sure most are stocking up. How are you dealing with the ferry going out unexpectedly like it has. Has it ever affected your decision about living in the North?

Food on the Rocks

Along with the music at Folk on the Rocks, there was food. Glorious food. It seems these days food goes well with any event, so why should this one be any different.

Of course you know about Ecology North’s Rent-a-Plate operation that took place once again at the festival. Approximately 200 plastics plates circulated over the weekend.

Food on the Rocks

Once you got your plate there were several different food vendors you had to choose from. There were many different types of food to choose from, as well. From you basic cheeseburger to Thai food, pizza to hot dogs, chicken wraps to Armenian food. There were smoothies, coffee and lemon-aid to drink as well the Fry Guy and Ice Cream truck were there.

For those who wanted to try an authentic northern dish, there was fresh White Fish with a corn cob.

Needless to say there was tons of food and everyone must have been fed well, budget depending. Speaking to some vendors, they told me that they were seeing lines like they hadn’t seen in 5 years. Partly I think, the cloudy weather drove people to eat more.

Did you try any of the food out at Folk on the Rocks, what was your favourite dish? Mine would have been the Beef on a Bun in support of the Arthritis Society.

Community BBQ

Together the City of Yellowknife, Yellowknife Education District #1 and the Yellowknife Catholic School Board put on a big community BBQ for the family. The BBQ, which took place this past Saturday in the City Hall Civic Plaza, was a huge success. The weather, couldn’t have been nicer for the event and everyone was having a good time.

Beef Burger, Veggie Burgers and Fish were on hand, cooked by City Councilors and School Board members. The line was long and never seemed to slow down, a good indication the food was delicious. Even Yellowknife’s finest, our firefighters, stood inline to grab some grub.

The entire lawn was filled with picnic table for community members to just site and relax while they enjoy their food. In the background music from the St. Pats and Sir John high school jazz bands could be heard.

Once the kid finished their food, and got board, you could take them to play in the King of the Kastle, bouncing thing or get their faced painted. If they weren’t hyper enough by that point you could get they a stick of fresh cotton candy and they have them stand in awe as they watch a magician at work.

It was a fun afternoon, and it was great to see the community come together and share the wonderful weather. Did you go and get some food? Did you enjoy yourself?

Nico’s Market is Open

It seems like it has been a long time coming but the first store to open in the Centre Ice Plaza has now done so. Nico’s Market opened its doors to the public on Friday afternoon and the word quickly got out, as it was busy by the time I got around to going at noon on Saturday. I did not know what to expect from this store and for the longest time had no idea what it even going to be like. All I knew is that is was open and run by Chef Pierre, a local chef and owner of a couple restaurants and Le Stockpot a Deli/Bakery.

Walking in was literally like walking into a market down south, this may just be because this was the first time I walked into this store but it did remind me of similar stores I have been to in Ontario. I will first give you my impression of the store and then some of the details I know about the store.

When you walk in, you think “wow this is nice”. It isn’t like any other store we have here in Yellowknife. Everything is so close together and there were staff everywhere trying their best to help everyone. The selection of vegetables was decent and they all looked fresh, keep in mind I don’t often go to Co-op and can’t compare. The one thing I noticed right away was the rows and rows of spices and sauces along with many other jarred goods. The choice was there, which is something I think a lot of Yellowknifers will appreciate. At the back of the store is a cooler section which was empty at the moment, but I am guessing will be stocked with juices, milk and dairy products. Along one side is where you’ll find your meats and cheeses to choose from. Then there is the little café called Nico’s Cafe, which serves a variety of food and drinks including Specialty Drinks, Coffee, Panini’s and Sandwiches. On the other side you’ll find kitchen supplies, tons of them. I even saw cast iron pan, which I have been looking for. The selection of supplies was phenomenal and if you can’t find what you are looking for in there, then it probably doesn’t exist. In all I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the store. There are still some kinks that need to be worked out, such as the checking out processes. Many items in the store were not yet in the computer and slowed down the check out process drastically. I am also hoping that they price everything in the coming days, I find that is the one think that will put me off from buying at a store is not knowing the price. I think many would agree, especially since a Facebook Group devoted to the Cost of Living in Yellowknife has just been created.

On to what I know or rather what I was told. If you have at all been to Le Stockpot lately you will have noticed many items there are now gone. That is because the majority of kitchen supplies along with some jarred goods, which I mention earlier, are now available at Nico’s Market. They have now made or are making Le Stockpot more of a Sandwich Shop/Cafe with the addition of tables and chairs. This is all coming from Chef Pierre himself who I was able to talk to while in Nico’s Market. One of things I asked him was store hours as I could not find them posted anywhere. He told me, although he said he could be wrong, as of now they are Monday – Friday 7am-6pm and Saturday 9am-6pm. These seem a little early but he did say they are subject to change.

You have heard my thoughts on the store and now I want to hear yours. Do you think it will succeed? Will you shop there? Let us know.

First if you haven’t had time to make it over there here is a short video and photos.

St. Pats Delivers Christmas Hampers

Yesterday I took a stroll down to the Salvation Army where I found 250 students all lined up. They were lined up from the front door of the Army all the way up the hill into the gym of St. Pats High School. They made a human chain in order to deliver the 25 hamper the school had gathered and put together. The hampers I then distibuted to local families in need over the holidays.

I have put together this video which show a little more of what was going on, as well as some photos.
