Yk Quick Tips is your guide to Yellowknife, NT. Whether you are moving to the city, just visiting or live here, we can offer information about all the best things. The show will contain info about what to do while visiting, things to know about moving to the City and everything else interesting about the Knife .
Have you been to the Sombe K’e Civic Plaza yet?
The plaza is a newer addition to Yellowknife’s downtown core. It is located where the Gerry Murphy Arena and city parking lot use to be, in front of City Hall on Memorial Drive (49th). The space is big and open on the shore of Frame Lake. An amphitheater is situated at the lowest point on the shoreline with several different levels of green grass from there. Few trees scatter the area, with flowers for added appeal. Enjoying your lunch has become a hit at the new plaza, with picnic tables, benches and ledges throughout the site.
This spot has also become popular for event, such as Caribou Carnival, Raven Mad Daze, Aboriginal Day and Canada Day. It provides a big open space for tent, vendors, and entertainment.
Listen to episode 11 of Yk Quick Tips to hear more about the Sombe K’e Civic Plaza.
If you haven’t already, make sure you subscribe to this show on iTunes so you can listen to it on the go. Also, one of my favourite things to do is answer your Yellowknife related questions, so send them in to info@ykonline.ca and maybe they’ll get on the show.
I guess some would say it is unfortunate that Canada Day this year happens to land on a Thursday because we’ll have to go into work on Friday. For others it might just be a perfect excuse to make it a four-day weekend. Either way Thursday is when the festivities will be happening.
Parade
The Rotary Canada Day Parade is planned to start at 11am at the Yellowknife Community Area and go down Franklin Ave before ending at Sir John Franklin High School. You can click this link to see the full parade route. I suggest coming out early to get a good spot along the parade route. This years theme is “My Canada”, in other words floats will resemble what Canada mean to the decorators. The Rotary Club has also provided this PDF with information about building a float. I will be down on the streets for the parade photographing, videoing, and tweeting during the parade.
Somba K’e Civic Plaza
After the parade head over to the Somba K’e Civic Plaza for more Canada Day activities. Like Raven Mad Daze and the Community BBQ, there will be food venders, games, and live entertainment – more information will be added when received on Monday. The event is family friendly and if the rain holds off should be a great way to spend Canada Day. If you were hoping for Fireworks, all we have offer is a midnight sun.
If Raining
The festivities will be moved to the Multiplex Arena!
On Saturday June 19th, we crank the amp a notch for it’s boogaloo hour. World ensemble Malade Mantra will get your feet off the ground at this midnight sun concert held on sand at Folk on the Rocks site.
Hailing from Montreal Beach, this five piece orchestra is sunshine with music instruments. Playing their own strain of up-beat sounds, Malade Mantra is the project of a flock of shrewd songbirds sharing a passion for migration and cultural mishmash. Their music allies the festive energy of reggae and zouk to the roaring appetite of jungle-jazz, the raw intensity of ska punk and regular of French sexiness.
Yellowknife’s own jamboree-for-hire squad The Dawgwoods will get the rumba started at 10 PM.
This licensed event is blessed by the amazing people at Folk on the Rocks and Canadian North.
Well I am shocked, I was really expecting a hot weekend after the day we had on Thursday. I guess we can’t get everything. I only hope it doesn’t put a damper on this weekends events.
I already have a number of events up on the Calendar like:
If that isn’t enough to keep you busy there are also lots that I didn’t get around to mentioning until now:
Midnight Sun Golf Classic – June 18 11am – June 19 8pm – More here
Carnival/Fair – All weekend – Bristal Monument parking lot – Rides, games, etc
Ice Cream and a Bowl – Fireweed Studio (City Hall) – Fundraiser – June 19 11am – 4pm
Take Your Dad Golf – Yk Mini Golf – Free BBQ – put on by Centre for Northern Families
If you have any questions or know of more events please post them in the comments below. Lets have a great Solstice/Father’s Day/Golf Playing/festival going weekend.
Coming up this Monday is Aboriginal Day and to celebrate there will be a bunch of different events happening around the City.
An Aboriginal Day parade will take place at 11:00am and start from the Yellowknife Community Arena, go down Franklin Ave to 47th St, and then onto 49th Ave.
The parade will end at the Somba K’e Park where you will find the Aboriginal Day Festivities and Fish Fry. Fun for the family from 12pm to 5pm. Thanks to the North Slave Metis Alliance.
At the same time the Yellowknives Dene First Nation will be putting on traditional displays, hand games and drum dances happening out at the Weledeh site (Yellowknife River) – first LEFT after the bridge. Hand games and drum dancing could go until 12am.
For more information about these events call Gail at 446-1060 or 873-5060. Also see all the other events happening over this weekend.
Back when I was a kid Rave Mad Daze was a whole lot different than it will be this year. Memories of Franklin Ave blocked off with vendors of all sorts up and down the street. It was a sight to see, and excitement filled the air. Whether a kid or adult there was lots to do. Live music, games of all sort, car show, panning for gold, food galore and much more. Alas, the excitement died down and eventually we seemed to have lost interest or the meaning of the night long festive just seemed to have changed. Finally the festival was just called off due to many reasons.
Now it is BACK! The Caribou Carnival Association, which also revived the 2010 Caribou Carnival, are also bringing back Raven Mad Daze. This years tag line for the event is “A New Beginning”
Raven Mad Daze this year will feature a new format but still be full of fun for everyone. The events will be held in the Somba ‘Ke Park, beside City Hall, and go from 11am – 12pm on June 19. Godson, the local artist, will be having his CD launch party at the event. Along with Godson, the world-famous magician, Shawn Farquhar will be performing. Malade Mantra, who will also be performing at the Solstice Bash, will be making an appearance at Raven Mad Daze. Along with the live entertainment, there will be food vendors, face painting, games and more
A big thanks goes out to Rick of Rick and the Relics and James of James Boraski & Momentary Evolution for putting this events together. They will also be performing throughout the evening. For more information go to the Raven Mad Daze website: www.ravenmaddaze.com
This seems to be happening a lot lately. I just get so many events sent to me I don’t have time to post them all. Because of that I hope to soon post a tutorial on how you can easily add events. Until then I will just fill you in on what is happening this weekend.

Music in the Park – 6:30pm – Civic Plaza/Somba’k Park – Check out local bands
Tourism Week Fun in the Sun Golf Tournament – 11am – Golf Course
Relay For Life – 7pm – 7am – William MacDonald School Track
Much is happening this weekend and I didn’t have time to write out individual posts for each event, so I will resort to just one. As I always seem to do in these posts I will mention the weather. Hasn’t the weather been nice the past week, I mean, could it get any better. I for one don’t think so. Although I am a little nervous as to how long it will actually last and weather or not we will get anymore frosty nights.

Bella Dance Academy presents The Wizard Of Oz, playing at 7pm at NACC. NACC EVENT
On Monday, May 31, 2010, the Amazing Butthead Race will be held at City Hall. Students from around town in Grades 5-9 will gather at 9:15 to get instructions before heading out to retrieve various clues throughout the downtown area. The hunt will go until 12pm and everyone will then gather back at City Hall.
At 1pm, Honourable Sandy Lee will announce this month’s winners of the event and this month’s Don’t Be a Butthead campaign. The campaign is widely known in Yellowknife and is now in its sixth year.
May 31 is also World No Tobacco Day:
It is meant to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption across the globe. The day is further intended to draw global attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to negative health effects, which currently lead to 5.4 million deaths worldwide annually. The member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) created World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) in 1987. In the past twenty years, the day has been met with both enthusiasm and resistance across the globe from governments, public health organizations, smokers, growers, and the tobacco industry.
