Yk Quick Tips is your guide to Yellowknife, NT. Whether you are moving to the city or just visiting, we can offer information about all the best things. The show will contain information about what to do while visiting, things to know about moving to the City and everything else interesting about Yellowknife.

For the first episode of Yellowknife Quick Tips we continue our series of How to Get to Yellowknife. So, this episode is about flying to Yellowknife.

Once again we start off in Edmonton, because for most of the time Edmonton is the only destination the airlines will fly to, going South of 60. That being said for the winter over the past couple of years Air Canada has offered some flights directly to and from Vancouver.

Yellowknife now, as of May 2010, has four major airlines operating in the City. First Air and Canadian North have been around for a couple of decades, flying daily to and from Edmonton, as well as all over the North. A few years ago Air Canada started flying Yellowknife to Edmonton, with the addition to Vancouver in the winter, most likely for Japanese tourists visiting to see the Northern Lights. WestJet was the fourth to arrive in the 3rd quarter of 2009, but may be struggling to fill flights.

You could say the arrival of two new airlines is a good thing, but like everything else, there are positives and negatives. I will discuss some in the show, like prices.

Yk Quick Tips is your guide to Yellowknife, NT. Whether you are moving to the city or just visiting, we can offer information about all the best things. The show will contain information about what to do while visiting, things to know about moving to the City and everything else interesting about Yellowknife.

For the first episode of Yellowknife Quick Tips I thought it would be appropriate to talk about how to get to Yellowknife. So, this episode is about driving to Yellowknife.

We start off in Edmonton, Alberta, as it is a good, known, starting point for your journey north. As we leave Edmonton, Kyle talks about some of the towns you will encounter in Alberta while heading north and little tidbits about them. Information like Gas Stations, Motels and Dairy Queens.

When we get to High Level we learn that after this little town there isn’t much else until Yellowknife, amenities wise. We lose cell service, and fast food joints. As we travel the road into the NWT, Kyle enlightens us about some of the tourist information and attractions that can be seen. Like the border visitor centre and Alexandria Falls, which are a must while driving up in the summer.

A key sign that you’re on your finally leg of your drive is the Mackenzie River. In the summer you’ll have the pleasure of a ride on the Merv Hardie or in the winter a stroll on the Ice Bridge. Once past Fort Providence, be sure to watch out for the bison, they may very well be everywhere. Kyle explains about how to safely pass them if they happen to be on the side of the road.

Marshall Lawrence, also know as Doctor Blues, is a Blues extraordinaire, who is based out of Edmonton. Accompanying Dr. Blues on his trip was Toby Tellier, a videographer extraordinaire. She was following Dr. Blues around documenting his trip. Why, you might ask. Because Dr. Blues has his own documentary series. Tellier has been filming, and editing 14 episodes now, today being the release of the Caribou Carnival episode. Yellowknife’s Greatest Indoor Show Overview

Well it seems as the first day of Yellowknife’s Greatest Indoor Show comes to a close it can be called a success. Constantly throughout the day there was a line up going out the door of people waiting to get it. The place seemed to be at capacity most of the day as I was always arm in arm with me person beside me. I was able to meet a lot of wonderful new people some who I have been in contact with via the web and was finally able to put a face to the name and of course I ran into old faces as well. This is Yellowknife after all.

There were many great companies set up at the Show, some new, some old, everyone with a smile on their face non the less.

DSC_0021 First Air was out in the front lobby set-up along an entire wall. They had a chance to win a trip for 2. What you had to do was guess a number between 1 and 99. Good luck. They also had Dave Brosha at one end of their booth showing off some of his amazing photography.

BAM Gone

The Shamwow guy or actually Miracle Shammy guy was amazing as well. I don’t think I have ever heard someone talk as fast and as clear as he did.

This Shammy is purely amazing. It is one thing to see it on TV but to see it in real life, I felt like throwing money at him. He made some excellent points throughout his presentation that not only do these Shammies soak up more liquid than any other cloth but also they are reusable and are good up to 2 year. Green is in, so get your Shammy now. Two bundles for $25, beats anywhere to boot.

YK Gossip: Yktrader Moving South

You know what they say about a small town. You can never keep a secret for very long.

I want to share with you what I’m guessing not many know yet. The owner and operator of Yktrader is moving out of Yellowknife and going onto bigger and better things. What does that mean for Yktrader, well as far as I’m aware nothing. He and his wife will still be running it but from down south, although I’m sure they will have someone here in Yellowknife to deal with the money coming in from advertisers and sellers. I would personally like to congratulate them on their success with the site, I remember years ago when they came around handing out fliers when it was first starting out. It has now grown to a full time job.

So where are they going, what are they doing. First of all if they (the owners) are reading this, I know you are moving because I know your house is being advertised for sale on your own site. With a little bit of digging and quick asking of questions to some people I found out that they are moving too Red Deer. After finding that out I started doing my own digging online here.

Good classified sites are hard to come by that are directed to just one community. I mean Craigslist and Kijiji are great but they are to broad for a small town. So only naturally did I try and type redeertrader.com in to my address bar only to find a Coming Soon post. At that point I was pretty certain as to what was happening but a quick Whois check confirmed it.

Now you know! Yktrader onto Red Deer Trader, soon it will be on Edmonton and Calgary.
