True North Rotary Ice Device Challenge

Guessing when something will fall through the ice on a lake is a brilliant idea for a fundraiser. I remember as I child I heard about a similar fundraiser where participants could guess which ice fishing hut would fall through the ice first. Kudos to the Yellowknife’s True North Rotary Club for this idea.

On Saturday, April 21, 2012, the rotary club will be putting “the device” on Frame Lake just behind the City Hall building. The device will be fixed with a timer that will start once it is placed on the ice. When it falls through the timer will stop and the participant who guesses the time closest to when it falls through wins.

Prizes for this contest include a $3000 cash prize for first place and $2000 and $1000 for the second and third place participants.

Guesses, as Rotarians are calling them, will be available starting April 21 from any True North Rotarian. They will also be available at Global Storm IT, Adam Dental Clinic and MacKay LLP. Guesses will be $10 per guess or $25 for three.

We got the idea from a Rotary club in Colorado who has been successfully running it for 28 years. We thought it would be a great way to raise some funds for the community but do it in a fun, unique way. – Jeromy Ball

So if you think you know when the device will break through the ice and plunge into the icy cold water you better get a “guess” as soon as possible.

If you are a non-profit group and have an event happening or something of the like send the information to info@ykonline.ca and I’ll do my best to help promote it within the community.
