It wasn’t to long ago I mentioned that Peter and the Wolf was playing here in Yellowknife at the Greenstone Building. Well all though I did not get a chance to get out and see the performance of actors, artists and musicians, The Media Mentor did and was able to take some video. I think this is only part one, so if more parts become available I will post them here in this post.
When I came across this, through twitter, I got really excited. Then I came to grips with it. Google has gone one step further with their Street View and now have Street View Snowmobile. Although I am going to call it Google Snowmobile Trail View. This was done for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics which will be taking off in a couple days.
Although I don’t think we, here in Yellowknife, will have the pleasure of this feature anytime soon, I still think it would be a neat feature to have. It was asked the other day where to get a map of all the snowmobile trails around Yellowknife, but the question goes unanswered. The last place I knew about was Wolverine Sports, but since they closed I don’t think you can get them commercially anymore.
Yellowknife has such an elaborate snowmobile trail system that it would be highly beneficial to have. It would be great for planning a trip ahead or for those who don’t know the area as well. What are your thoughts on having our snowmobile trail system mapped by Google? I think it would be awesome, I don’t think there is anywhere else in Canada with our type of trail system.
Browsing through Youtube again, I came across this little gem of a video. It is a song about the men and women who work up at the diamond mines as well as the truck drive and road crews that operate up and down the Tibbit to Contwoyto Ice Road. The song, The Ice Road, was produced by David Sinclair and written and preformed by Kent Fiddy.
Kent Fiddy is, from what I found, a musician from British Colombia:
Kent Douglas Fiddy has worked as a songwriter and performer for many years. His material has been published by Irving/Almo Music(Canada/U.S.A), Chappel Music and Kenny Rogers’ Lionshare Music. His recordings have been released internationally. His songs are used in schools for both literacy and music education purposes. Kent has opened for diverse artists as blues legends Sonny Terry Brownie McGee and Valdy, Melanie Doane, Dave Mallett, Jonny Hardy(Old Blind Dogs) and Gavin Marwick(Iron Horse). He has performed at benefits with artists including k.d. lang, Shari Ulrich, Spirit of the West and Don Herron. Recent concert appearances include festivals in both Atlantic and Pacific Canada.
Anyways here is the Ice Road song, accompanied by some slides.
I don’t know if many remember, but when some of the bloggers saw the trailer for Ice Pilots NWT we thought it would be funny to make a parody video. Once our trailer was out and so were the first few episodes of Ice Pilots NWT, we got together again to film the first episode of Ice Bloggers NWT. If you follow the show you will be able to see what lines we used. Most of the our first episode is just a parody of a couple Ice Pilots episodes.
It was good fun make as well as interesting… We plan on making more but don’t know when. As you can tell this episode was filmed before Christmas but I only got around to getting it out now.
Did you miss the protest yesterday? The protest was against the proroguing of parliament. Thank again to @MediaMentor for getting these videos up on YouTube.
On a very gorgeous Sunday afternoon we ventured out on snowmobile around Yellowknife. About half way between Yellowknife and Dettah we stopped and took a break to take in the view. It was peaceful and quiet. We thought about months earlier when we were able to get in our boat for the first time on Great Slave Lake before all the ice was gone. It was about the same spot we were stopped today where the ice started. While standing out on the ice with no gloves on recording this video, I thought how bizarre it was that it was warm enough to do so in the middle of January. I can remember when this was the time of year when Yellowknife had weeks of -40. Are those times over?
I thought this was a neat find this morning. As I was watching some old YkOnline videos I noticed this one in the related section. It appears to be an animated tour of the Yellowknife Airport. Starting on the tarmac and ending in the parking lot. At first I thought this may have something to do with Buffalo Airway’s reality TV show, Ice Pilots NWT, but as they only briefly showed Buffalo’s hanger I was lead to believe it was not. I am very impressed with the detail of the video and how correct it has in the placement of all the building and structures. It was only posted on the 22 of December so it might be as recent as this past fall. If anyone watches it works at the airport, I loved to know how precise they are with the placement of things in the video. Or if anyone know of why this video was made, leave a comment below.
Christmas Day is here and I hope you are having a wonderful one, whatever it is you are doing. Here are some Christmas videos I want to share, feel free to link to your favorites in the comments.
Earlier today I received a message informing me that the Dettah Ice Road was now open to the public. As I had to venture downtown anyways I thought I would take a drive out on to the ice and film it. I was certainly not the only one out there, word definitely travels quickly within town.
Experience the first drive on the Dettah Ice Road for the winter season of 09/10 through my trucks eyes.
