Going on Holidays

Open Road, Western AustraliaEvery year I have taken a break from work and headed out on the open road. I enjoy traveling through Western Canada and seeing the landscape and places I rarely see. I’m sure this is the same for a lot of people. Maybe not Western Canada, but anywhere in general. As much as we may love living in Yellowknife (or not) we have to get out for a bit. Whether to visit family back home, or just to see something new.

On September 1st I will be heading to Calgary to start my 20 day journey. I’ll be heading through Alberta into the mountains and then into British Colombia. If you’re interested you can read more on my personal blog travel section. This post is not about where I’m going, it is about the huge favour I need to ask.

YkOnline.ca means the world to me. I have met so many amazing people through this website and it is the Yellowknife Community that I truly cherish. Now because I will be away for a couple of weeks, and most likely out of Internet range, I’m hope some of you wonderful people out there would be interested in contributing a post or two.

To contribute is easy, all you need to do is CLICK HERE and register or log in and then you can create a new post. If that is still to complicated, you can send in your post to info@ykonline.ca

Posts can be about anything. Don’t think your post wont be good enough! Write a review of a local restaurant, write about a memory of Yellowknife, some history, write a tourist tip you have, write about anything Yellowknife. Posts do not have to be long, unless you want them to be. A couple of sentences and a photo or two is awesome!

WRITE ABOUT ANYTHING YELLOWKNIFE

Your help would mean the world to me. So I hope you consider it. If you want to talk about working together or contributing call me 444-0901 or email info@ykonline.ca

A New Host For Us

A good hosting provider for a website is a key aspect. They are the caretakers. They are the people that make this site show up every time you go to YkOnline.ca. Well unfortunately, our old provider was having to many issues and was just slowing us down.

So with a lot of tension I *paid* for a new provider and spent the day migrating the website. It is now close to 10pm and I am tired. Did I mention there is a donate button in the sidebar ;)

Please leave me a comment if you think the website seems fast, as that was what I was hoping for. I know there are some glitches around the site and I’m trying to fix them all, if you see one that I miss please let me know.

I’ll be back to my regular schedule of events as soon as possible, which includes photos and video of the Old Town Ramble and Ride.

Note on FOTR

Just a quick note here.

The weekend was amazing to say the least. I met a lot of great people, listened to some awesome music and just had an overall enjoyable time.

I took collectively over 1000 photos and 3 hours of video. I have been working hard to edit it all down and publish it out to you all.

Unfortunately I needed sleep, and starting work at 7am isn’t fun on no sleep, trust me.

Will have more for you all later today and throughout the week.

I love you, Yellowknife. Thanks for the awesome weekend.

Taking the Weekend Off

I am making the executive decision and am going to take the weekend off.

I really would have liked to have been able to go to Music in the Park and Relay for Life and all the other events going on this weekend, but I needed to draw the line.

This coming week and next weekend is going to be very busy for YkOnline and myself, so I think it is best I rest up now.

Closed

As I always am saying this is a community site and I’d love for more people to contribute. If you happen to be at any of the events happening this weekend and want to share, send in a post or pictures to YellowknifeOnline@gmail.com. You will be credited and it would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome New Readers

Although the Trade Show is now over a week ago, I thought I would write a quick Welcome Post to our new reader, because there are lots. It was a pleasure to meet so many great people at the show and we heard a lot of great feed back.

Post Published Dates

I trying to publish a new post 5 times a week. That being said, sometimes it is more, sometimes it is less. It has a lot to do with what is happening in the news, what events are going on and the general vibe of Yellowknife. Want to send in ideas for a story or tips? Send them to info@ykonline.ca

Contributing to YkOnline.ca

Some may not know, but YkOnline.ca is a one man operation. I, KyleWith, have written 99% of the posts here with occasional guest post. I am always looking for Guest Posters or Contributors. I can’t offer anything in return other than exposure to all of Yellowknife, but if you are interested there are a couple different way to get published on YkOnline.ca. 1) Register for an account and use the “easy to use” back-end of YkOnline.ca, which will have all the editing and formatting tools needed to write or 2) Write your article in Word, Pages, TextEdit, etc and then paste it into the form on our Contribute Page.

Social Media

In our first year of existence, Social Networking sites were a big part of the growth of YkOnline.ca and still are. I use them to communicate with those around the community as well as those interested in coming to Yellowknife. Listen to what they are saying, as well as give them another way to find the content here on YkOnline.ca. Twitter is especially nice, because it is a quick and easy way to update people on what happening when it is happening. Like car accidents, fires, power outages, etc. You can follow YkOnline on Twitter: @YkOnline and like us on Facebook: Facebook.com/YkOnline.ca

Subscribing

Subscribing to YkOnline.ca is an easy way to get the latest articles. There are two ways of subscribing. 1) The tradition way by RSS Feed, which is http://feeds.feedburner.com/YellowknifeOnline. 2) By email, which is the easier way. Simply click THIS LINK and fill in your email address and then you will receive an e-mail when a new article is published.

Toolbar

I have just added this new feature to the site. I’m not to sure how it will help or effect how everyone uses the site. It appears to have easy integration with Facebook, Twitter, which may help build a stronger community. There are also feature like a search, that in my opinion is better than the site’s built in one and a on site translator, that will change YkOnline into most popular languages. More features to come.

Donating

I hate asking for money, it just doesn’t seem right to me. That being said, I put a lot of work into YkOnline.ca, which at the moment makes very little money. So if you find this site at all useful and you enjoy what it is I’m doing, I encourage you to consider donating. Even if it is only $2, that’ll buy me a coffee somewhere. To Donate CLICK HERE or use the Donate Button in the sidebar of YkOnline.ca.

Well, that is it folks. I hope this helps you enjoy the best of YkOnline.ca. Explore around the site, comment with your thoughts and tell your friends. If you’d like to leave any feedback do so in the comment section below.

YkOnline.ca will be at the Trade Show

May 5, 2010, marks YkOnline.ca’s 1 year anniversary. One of our first posts was about last years Trade Show. It was fun to walk around and see everyone having a good time. I had a chance to meet many people there and since then. With out the support and acceptance of Yellowknife I don’t think YkOnline could be what it is today.

I am hoping we continue to grown and become a place where residents and tourist alike come to find out informative and intriguing information about Yellowknife. Because we want to get out in to the community more, this year we have decided to set up a booth at the Trade Show. We will be in booth #32, which is along the right hand wall as you walk into the Shorty Brown Arena of the Multiplex.

We wont have much, we don’t have any fancy products to show off. We will have little cards that give new readers an idea about what we have, a monitor displaying the website and, of course, myself. We were going to have a draw for an iPad, but I couldn’t bring anymore back from the US and quite frankly I don’t have that kind of money.

In addition to spreading the word about YkOnline, we will also be live streaming the event. As of now, we will only have a static camera at our booth, but we may break out the mobile pack. The live stream or webcast will be playing the entire time the Trade Show is open. To watch you can go to http://ykonline.ca/live.

I’m sure I’ll be tweeting and writing while there as well.

I hope to meet many new people at the show, as well as see some old faces. See you all there.

I’m Leaving Town for a Bit, So….

On Thursday morning I’m leaving Yellowknife for a couple weeks. We all need to get out of the north occasionally and I’m jumping on an opportunity that has been presented.

The idea of going on a vacation is simple, to not work and relax. Leave everything behind you while your gone. The problem I have is, if I stop writing for YkOnline, nothing will happen. No content will be published between the time I leave and the time I get back, unless I find WiFi while I’m away and have something to write about.

I do not have a solution to my problem, only a plea for help. This site is a community site for the community, keep that in mind. My plea to you is, please consider contributing. At this point I will consider publishing anything related to or for Yellowknife (keep in mind it has to be viewing friendly, no horrid rants) and it is the only way to keep fresh content on YkOnline while I’m gone.

Here are 3 simple ways to write a post on YkOnline:

  1. Register or Login and write your post in the YkOnline back-end.
  2. Go to our Contribute Page and send in your post from there.
  3. Send you post via e-mail to contribute@ykonline.ca.

When it comes to what your post can be about, it is simple. Write about anything for the people of Yellowknife. Anything like an opinion article, event you went to, an event coming up, politics, history, sports, photos, video, anything. The length of the post is up to you!

I truly hope some of you contribute to YkOnline, keeping it afloat while I am away.

We’ll see you all when I get back.

Your friend, Kyle.

Best Content for YkOnline.ca

I have pondered lately about what type of content is best for YkOnline.ca, actually I always seem to be thinking about it. Some may think a blog is traditionally text, but then the 2.0 Web is all about multimedia, which goes to say they any type of content is acceptable. That is why I’m asking the question today, what kind of content do you like best? If you haven’t noticed I like all types of content, mainly audio and visual content though. I will give you a run down of how I would LOVE to see content here on YkOnline.ca.

We’ll start with photos and video (the visual content). I enjoy producing posts with lots of photos and videos because I feel it does a better job at telling a story or delivering a message than if I were to write it out. Along with these photos and videos I will add text to the post and generally explain what is happening in them. I find if I see photos and video with in a post accompanied by text I can relate better to what the author is trying to say (I’m a visual learner).

Moving on to audio, a medium I don’t think we have done enough of on YkOnline.ca. I don’t know how many of you listen to CBC Radio but I feel as though there are no good audio shows about Yellowknife and that is where I want to help. I’m waiting on a portable audio recorder that will allow me to get out more and help bring to life the voice of Yellowknife. These audio shows (Podcasts) are available on iTunes or right here on the site and are once again accompanied by text that describe what it is the post is about.

As you can see all the mediums mentioned above are accompanied with text. So I guess it is obvious that text is most prominent within this site. Some post can’t have photos, video or audio, like when a local issue has come up throughout town and I want to let everyone have their say. Sometimes it is best to have text, especially those of you who don’t have speakers or can’t watch video at work.

This is where I want to hand it over to you. Sometimes I don’t know which medium to go with and end of with a post that should may have good content but was produced horribly. Below is a simple poll with 4 options. You can choose which are you topic three ways of receiving content. Please vote and spread the word.

Which do you Prefer

  • Bullocks Bistro (53%, 54 Votes)
  • The Wildcat Cafe (47%, 48 Votes)

Total Voters: 102

A Call to Contribution

I love Yellowknife, I don’t think there is any doubt about that when it comes to YkOnline. I love sharing with you events and information from around the City, I also try to engage you with current local issues happening in our city. Doing all this is something that takes a lot of my time, that’s not to say I don’t enjoy doing it, but it is time-consuming. I also have many more ideas for more interesting content that I wont be able to do unless I have help.

That is where you, fine citizens of Yellowknife, come in. To have you contribute to YkOnline would be a pleasure to not only me, but to all our readers as well. It would be like giving back to our community and promoting it for the world to see. You would not only be offering your insight on what is going on around Yellowknife, but also giving readers a different perspective. Although I do appreciate our local News Media, I believe a community should have a source of local information provided by locals themselves. A source where the business model is not based around making money but rather providing informative and engaging information by a group of people who are passionate about their city.

I have asked around for others to contribute to YkOnline for a little while now and a small few have offered a post on occasion. So because of that I thought it might help if I specify what some topics could be. They are as followed:

A Yellowknife History Writer – To have a weekly section where an individual writes about the birth of Yellowknife and what has happened since then would be amazing. This information is so important for our community to know, and I feel very strongly that the history of Yellowknife should be shared. Unfortunately I don’t know enough about it to be able to write them myself.

A Local Featured Business Writer – I think there are some amazing businesses in our town. I would love to see owners interviewed and advice given about what has led to success. Also, I think there should be some promotion of good deeds that our businessmen do. Another idea would be someone who would like to write about tips and struggles from their local business. This includes local restaurants, which is something I think would be a great feature for both residents and visitors.

A Few Community Event Writers – Know I know there is a handful of people that don’t miss a NACC show, concert, church event, or anything else that happens in our city. It is time that your voice is heard and you have a place to write about your experiences here. The event attendances will potentially triple if people only knew what cool stuff is going on. Or you could just add your event to the calendar by following these easy steps.

Event Coverage Writers – We all go to events around town, and a majority of us even take pictures. Having posts written about past events is something I have done off and on and I think is very valuable information. Writing a recap post is actually rather easy, after you attend an event all you have to do is type out your thoughts on the event.

A Healthy Lifestyle Writer – Living in the North means long dark winters and when I sit behind a computer all day I need healthy motivation and I know I’m not alone. Even if you don’t think you have anything to offer you probably do. If your business if focused on health, write for YkOnline and become known.

Co-hosting the YkOnline Podcast - Talking to myself is boring, not only for me, but everyone else. I’m looking for a co-host for the YkOnline podcast. The format for the show is very laid back and informal, the show should just sound like a conversation between locals that care. It would be done weekly and recorded whenever is convenient. Throughout the week an online document shared between hosts would include show topics so both parties are up on everything that will be discussed. This is something I would really like to see succeed, so if you are the least bit interested please contact me in one of the methods I mention below.

Opinion Columns – The newspaper offers readers the chance to write in and share the opinion but unfortunately they can only show so many. They also do not offer the chance for discussion. If you have an opinion about a local issue and want to share it with everyone YkOnline is the place. It is also the place for local discussion. Reading some comments can be more valuable than posts on occasion.

Local Tip Contributors - There is a lot going on around town throughout the day that sometimes we miss them. If you see something going on (ie, Car Accident, Fire, breaking news, etc.) send it in to us so everyone else knows. You can to do this four different ways: 1) Call or Text 444-0901 2) e-mail contribute@ykonline.ca 3)On Twitter @YkOnline 4) Facebook.

Although I am asking for contributors in these topics it doesn’t mean I will not accept other posts and it also doesn’t mean I will not be writing about these topics as well.

How to Contribute Posts - There are three ways of doing it. 1) Go over to the Contribute Page and copy your post into the text field there. 2) Register for you own account by going to the Register Page and then Login Here. Then you will have full access to the built-in text editor (This is the preferred method). 3)E-mail in your post to contribute@ykonline.ca.

I hope some if you consider contributing to YkOnline and promoting our fine City. If you have any questions about anything please send me an e-mail or give me a call 444-0901

Problems Problems

This morning at about the same time we had two posts being published our servers started to go down. Our hosting provider which hosts YkOnline and some of our others sites on their servers was having internal errors and we couldn’t do anything about it. Unfortunately this lasted for about 2 hours this morning until finally we were able to get a hold of them and get them to fix the problem. We apologize if anyone was trying to get on the site and couldn’t. We feared that because the site was down some of you would miss this morning posts.

If you did here is what you missed:

We hope you get a chance to take a look at those 2 articles and leave you feedback. We’d love to hear from you.
