Music Video from 1985: Isolation Blues by The Komatiks

This music video could very well be the first one ever made in Yellowknife, maybe the NWT and it is awesome. The band “The Komatiks” were a Yellowknife band from 1985 to 1988 and had one cassette – yeah cassette not even a CD – called “Spirit of the Wind”.

The video below is of the bands song “Isolation Blues” which was made in 1985. It was produced by Mart Coulthard and Gary Elmer who worked for the CBC at the time.

The video is a blast from the past with many big local names involved in it like Norman Glowach, Pat Braden and Terry Woolfe. Other band members included Tom Hudson, James Milligan, Wayne Bertrand, Paul Tanner and Sue Leon.

Enjoy.

Wave Walkers Inspired Ice Competition Time Lapse

If you noticed while at the Long John Jamboree, the father/son team from Indiana had a camera and tripod setup the entire time they were carving their winning piece. That camera was taking photos every couple minutes and continued to do so the entire weekend.

By the end of the weekend Stephan and Mike Koch had a time lapse of themselves carving the ice block. This is the video they made.

How Yellowknife gets ready for Ice Carving

Fort St. John’s High On Ice, Ice Carving festival has nothing on Yellowknife! While they have to get their ice shipped to town for the festival, Yellowknife just has to drive out of the Ice Road that just so happens to be right beside town, pull out are rather large chainsaws and pull out a block of ice.

There will be Ice Carving events at the first annual Long John Jamboree happening March 23-25, 2012 and this video below shows how they are pulling out the ice.

Where to view the Aurora around Yellowknife

This season has presented us with some amazing Aurora Borealis already this year and they are only going to get better. The 2013/14 winter season is supposed to be one of the best.

Where do you view the aurora, well if you are in Yellowknife and they are strong they can be seen right from your front door, but that isn’t always the case. For those times when you want to get out-of-town a bit, away from the light pollution, I have a solution.

Thanks to local photog, Amy, we have a Google Map with all the great places to see the Aurora. The best part is everyone can add to the map. Go ahead and click the image below.

Video Slideshow of the Royal Visit in 1970

The history of Yellowknife has always and will always fascinate me. I’m always looking to learn more, wherever I can find it.

Now we just had a royal couple visit Yellowknife over the summer of 2011 and we also had the Queen visit Yellowknife in the early 90′s, but I didn’t know they also visited in the 70′s.

The video’s description says HRH Elizabeth II, Prince Phillip, Prince Charles and Princess Anne came to Yellowknife on the occasion of the Centenary of the NWT. This makes sense

I’m not sure whose photos these were or where they came from, but I’m glad someone has put together this slideshow.

Arctic Ram Videos

Just found this video posted about the Arctic Ram exercise out at the Sand Pits. It shows just some normal activities that I bet a lot of us do when we go out to our cabins.

If you haven’t gone out to the Sand Pits lately, you should take the drive. It is quite the sight to see all the vehicles, tents and people out there. Just watch out for low flying helicopters and power lines. ;)

I just found some more videos:

Yellowknife has a lot of Twitter users

Admittedly, I was becoming a little disconnected with the #YZF Twitter community, since I left Yellowknife a year and a half ago, but since deciding to move back I’m amazed at what I’m finding.

I’m quite impressed by the amount of users Yellowknife has on Twitter, and many from different walks of life. There are Government employees on the Territorial level and more and more from the municipal level now as well. Many of the journalists, editors and radio hosts are also using Twitter regularly. Plus an abundance of other folks, including a lot of the creatives in Yellowknife.

Yellowknife Twitter

Most, if not all the New Sources in Yellowknife are also attempting to use Twitter. They are at least piping their news stories into Twitter, props to some of CBC’s reporters that live tweet #NWTpoli. That is always nice to follow.

The one front that is slowly coming along is the businesses. I have seen many of Yellowknife’s business join Twitter, tweet once or twice and then stop. For me that is hard to watch. I want to see them on the platform, because it is such an easy way to communicate with the community.

One of the major issues with Twitter in the north is still whether or not there is value in it for a business. Is it worth the time? Is there an ROI? From my perspective, one of the biggest hang-ups is the fact that Twitter along with other Social Networks are free, but many fail to use them correctly. I spend most of my time figuring out how a person or a business can use these services to their advantage and properly, but again many fail to realize the value in spending the money learning a new medium. Eventually one day, with a bit of encouragement we’ll get there.

Getting away from the deep marketing jibber-jabber, lets talk about tweetups. The social gathering of those on twitter; an excuse to meet in real life (irl). I use to help organize them back in the day, but there has been many since I left YK. Lets change that please. I’m going to get settled, but once I am, I want to host a 2012 #yzftweetup.

There are a lot of people I don’t know on Twitter in Yellowknife now, like I said. I think it would be fun to meet and network. Who is with me?

Get your souvenir NWT license plate today!

Living in “the south” for a short period of time has opened my eyes to how much people really want our NWT license plates. Many of people have asked me in person and even asked me through this site.

These plates are like no other in the world, because of their unique shape. As we all know that shape is of a Polar Bear and is also shared with license plates of Nunavut.

NWT Polar Bear License Plate

Northwest Territories Tourism announced today that they will be distributing the trademarked polar bear shaped plates with new designs. They will also be the sole distributor of the plates to retailers, members of the public.

Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment and Transportation, David Ramsay has this to say “The polar bear licence plate is recognized around the world as a symbol of the Northwest Territories,” he said. “This partnership with NWT Tourism will ensure that this souvenir plate will promote the Northwest Territories as a tourist destination in the years to come.”

To get one of the new souvenir NWT License Plates you can either order one of the NWT Tourism site, call their office at (867) 873-5007 or by going to one of the local retailers around town.

While I believe the web-store has been around for a while now, I’m glad I came across this today as I’m constantly asked where they can be found.
