On Wednesday of this week, a little over 200 people filled the first auditorium at The Capitol Theatre for the 9th Annual St. Patrick’s High School Film Festival. This year, students (and teachers!) filmed music videos, sports videos, dramatic videos, comedies and even war movies. There was a little something for everybody on the big screen thanks to Mr. Rob Hart, the english and film teacher over at St. Pat’s.
Perhaps it was the music video based on the Relient K song “Curl Up And Die” starring two grade nine girls that spiked your fancy, or maybe it was the war epic called “Three to Iraq, One Came Back” starring three grade twelve boys and one graduate from last year. It could have even been the fourth Husky Boys movie starring four students from the elementary school that somehow have pull with Mr. Hart that got your attention. Either way, there was something for everybody.
The St. Patrick’s Film Festival started way back in 2001 with an introduction of The Shammy Boys. The Shammy Boys is a crime-fighting, light-saber-using team that began working at SPHS when some hall passes went missing back in 2001. The team includes Rob Hart, Brent Simmons & Fraser Oliver who still work at the school today, as well as Craig Mackillop who moved east a few years ago. Shortly after Mackillop moved, the SPHS film festival introduced a new line of superheros called: The Husky Boys! These crime-fighting teams along with many films created by students at St. Pat’s seem to be part of what is bringing the school, and even the community together for this night of amateur films.
