Folk on the Rocks, done for another year

It was a sad realization that I wouldn’t be able to make the 31st Folk on the Rocks. Folk is Yellowknife’s largest summer event and attracts people from all over the world and is basically a weekend long party on a beach with the backdrop of Long Lake.

At any given time at Folk on the Rocks there can be at least 4 stages going with different performers. Oh and the beer garden is always a big it, with some serious music happening there.

I have seen a lot of photos from many of the media folk that were at FOTR – great job done by everyone – and it looks like everyone has having a blast. I think Friday evening threatened with some stormy like weather, but passed over and a sunny hot weekend was had.

Royal Visit plans in Yellowknife

This morning the itinerary for the Royal Visit of Prince William and wife Catherine was unveiled. I think general Yellowknife is pretty excited and proud that the Royal couple will be coming through our city.

It is certainly a mystery to many other Canadians about why they will be coming to Yellowknife, as many don’t know the beauty that Yellowknife and NWT holds.

The couple will be in Yellowknife from July 4 – 6, 2011. Not all the details of their time in Yellowknife were unveiled, but from many other news source it sounds like the couple will get to meet a lot of Youth. First they will be attended a session of the Youth Parliament before heading off to the Blachford Lake Lodge by float plane (shocker, I know). While at the lodge with will get to meet some of the Canadian Rangers, along with other students and elders.

There is no doubt that the city will be a buzz while the couple passes though. If you happen to see or even get to meet the Royal couple, send us in your thoughts. Also send in any photos you may get experiencing Yellowknife. Everything can be sent to info@ykonline.ca

Here is the official itinerary for the Royal Tour.

FOTR 2011 Sneak Peak – Fred Penner

Well today Folk on the Rocks has given us a sneak peak as to who will be at the 31st Folk on the Rocks in July. There big name in the release is Mr. Fred Penner. I’m sure those of us who grew up in the 80′s and 90′s can recall Mr. Penner on the tube and in our ears.

Along with Fred Penner will be Luke Doucet & The White Falcon. Luke is Halifax-born, Winnipeg-raised troubadour. You can see more of Luke on his website http://www.lukedoucet.com/

Final thing coming from Folk on the Rocks is an all new way of announcing the 2011 line up called “Clue you in to our 2011 Lineup”. Starting March 28, Monday, they will post a image each week that provides a word puzzle we must figure out. Upon figuring it out, well learn who will be playing at Folk on the Rocks 2011, July 14 – 17.

Human Hamper Chain to Sally Ann

Wednesday afternoon 200 some students from St Pat’s Highschool lined up from the back of the school down to Franklin Ave and right in the front door of the Salvation Army.

This is the second year the students have done this. This year was a bigger turn out than last, with over 200 students up from 150. They also were able to put together 80 hampers.

Human Hamper ChainHuman Hamper Chain

Since they are no longer delivering hampers to homes, the students wanted to do something that would be noticed. They have done just that. They’re chain has attracted the attention of many residents of Yellowknife, as well as the News organization around town.

NCF2010 Day 2 Recap – Final Day

It seems so surreal that the 2010 Northern Communicators Forum is now over. I was definitely not a big part in the planning committee but I saw enough of the behind the scenes to get an idea of how much it takes to put on a two-day event like this.

NCF Day 2 - Final Day

Day two, like day one, was a blast. We didn’t start day two until 9am, so those who may have been out on the town the night before might have a chance to get to the Forum. Zoe once again greeted us all and gave us a recap of the previous day and then got the ball rolling once again.

NCF Day 2 - Final Day

Our first session of the day was broken up into three different presentations. Each presenter was from a different territory. Pauline Frost from the Yukon, John B. Zoe from NWT and Wende Halonen from Nunavut. Each presenter spoke about communication in their own communities and lives. A brief run down of the presenter’s presentations would be; Pauline spoke about Self Governing in Yukon, John showed a video about the aboriginal peoples of the NWT and Wende spoke about the challenges Nunavut faces when it comes to communicating between communities.

NCF Day 2 - Final Day

After our first health break, with some of the best chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever had, we all gathered back in the big room for a panel all about Social Media. The panel was compiled of Nick Charney, Amy Hacala, Jesse Brown and Mike Kujawski and moderated by Shawn McCann. The panel covered many good questions about why we need Social Media, how to use it, being transparent, listening, making a plan, getting connected in different ways and more. Parts of this session may have been a little too much for some people, but overall it was a success and I certainly learned a lot. One thing that seems to have stuck in my head is edict. An example was given, we let people use telephones even though they can call sex lines or waste time on them, we trust them not to. So why don’t we trust people to use Social Media, why should we have to be taught simple edict to use them.

NCF Day 2 - Final Day

I once again found lunch at the Trader Grill in the Explorer Hotel, not wanting to venture to far. After lunch I attended Nick Charney’s session on Putting the Social in Social Media. He spoke about his experience with social media in Government and how he uses them; he made it clear he is not a communicator within the government, just is open to using these tools and being different. His presentation was a lot about going from a closed world to an open one. To see his presentation see it on Prezi Here.

NCF Day 2 - Final Day

The last session I attended was a panel once again where each panelist gave a short presentation before a QnA session. The panelist were all northern photographers and was moderated by yet another northern photographer, Bill Braden. Patrick Kane, Kirsten Murphy and Tessa Macintosh each gave presentations on their perspective of photography in the north and its importance. One thing that you could see throughout each presentation was that photography connects people no matter how far away.

NCF Day 2 - Final Day

Thus concluding sessions for the 2010 Northern Communicators Forum. For one last time everyone gathered into one room and Zoe took to the stage. She went through a quick recap of the day and thanked those who should be thanked. Jodi, the chair of the Forum, then joined her up front and they drew for door prizes.

NCF Day 2 - Final Day

NCF Day 2 - Final Day

To officially close out the Forum the Yellowknives Dene were going to come in for a closing prayer, but they were running late, so we were treated to a very rambling Zoe. She was able to keep it together just long enough for the boys to come in and pray.

NCF Day 2 - Final Day

With that, we were done. I had a lot of fun at the Forum and learned a ton. I hope everyone else that attended left knowing something new. I want to send a big thanks to everyone who was involved in planning the Forum, especially Jodi, Lisa and Shawn who brought me on to help.

Food Drive Overview

On Saturday the Salvation Army held their annual Food Drive at the Co-op. The Food Drive went excellently and they had a great turn out.

Over the past few years the Salvation Army and Co-op have started selling pre-made hampers. These hampers have everything in them that could last a family a week. They are also known as the emergency food hampers. If a family comes in to the Army needing a little but of food to get through the week, that is what they are for. By, buying and donating these pre-made hampers it not only saves the Salvation Army staff time but also gives you a quick easy way to give back.
