Tourism Week 2012 is Here!

We are smack dab in the middle of Tourism Week, which is May 14 -20, 2012. There is not a lot going on that I know of to celebrate the week but we must not let it just pass by.

Yellowknife Tourism

Tourism is an important part of Yellowknife and helping visitors learn about Yellowknife is something I stride to do on YkOnline.ca. So this week I urge everyone to go out and do something tourist related in your own backyard. Well, not your real backyard, but our NWT backyard. Go for a hike, go camping, head down to Bullocks for some fresh fish or wild game, do something to help showcase what a great place Yellowknife is to visit.

Contest

While you are out doing that something tourism related get a picture of yourself doing it. Once you have that photo head to the Northwest Territories Tourism Facebook Page and enter their photo contest.

Remember you must be in the photo to be eligible to win 1 of 2 NWT Tourism Visa Gift Cards. So it is easy, just go have fun, get a picture of it and enter it on their Facebook Page.

Weather

I know what you are thinking, the weather is not that great but never fear we are Yellowknifers. We don’t let a little weather slow us down. Show me what you got!

Have fun celebrating Tourism Week.

2012 Yellowknife Spring Trade Show

The 2012 Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce Trade Show is only days away (and so is Mothers Day so don’t forget) and I believe it is all sold out. The trade show takes place at the Multiplex Arena and is expanding. This year both arenas, the lobby, DND Gym and the second level will be packed with booths.

2010 Yellowknife Trade Show Day 2

When:

  • Saturday May 12, 2012 – Doors open at 10am
  • Sunday May 13, 2012 – Doors open at 10am

Where: Yellowknife Multiplex Arena

Fee: $5 per person or $15 per family.

The trade show is always a lot of fun to go and see what the businesses and organizations of Yellowknife are up too. Swag bags are always a big hit and make sure to grab a pen early because every booth is bound to have a draw of some sort. This year also sounds promising for the food court, which has been growing with local food vender.

For more information on the trade show you can head to our static page which has information all about it.

Chili and Chips Sale this Thursday

The Yellowknife Association for Community Living is putting on a Chili and Chips Sale tomorrow, Thursday, April 26, 2012, from 11am to 1pm.

For those who want to get in on this deal and support a good cause, it will be happening beside the Lahm Ridge Tower (4509 Franklin Ave) and for a bowl of chili and a bag of chips it is only $5.

Somehow this is related to the Gumboot Rally but I don’t know how. Chili is good though.

It is the eve of the 1st annual Long John Jamboree and the schedule is still being worked on. There will be so many cool things happening this weekend that the organizers are having a hard time fitting them all in.

Nonetheless those they have a working schedule that will guide you through the week. There will be a Teddy Bear Hospital, Handgame Tournament, Snowmobile Rides, Music, Food and oh so much more.

Slip into those long john (not necessary for visiting the jamboree) and come down to Yellowknife Bay, between the Snow Castle and the Government Boat Launch.

City of Yellowknife’s Live Right Now Challenge

Here is the thing, I dropped the ball on helping promote the first round of the Live Right Now challenge the City of Yellowknife (yes that means us residents too) was participating in.

City of Yellowknife Live Right Now

The good news however, is that Yellowknife has made it to the finals, but the competition is not over yet. CBC’s Live Right Now challenge blog has more details here:

Moving forward, there is one more step to take before we name the Live Right Now Capital of Canada. Each of the semifinalists will be asked to organize a community event that showcases their spirit and dedication to living healthier, active lives.

This timing could not be more perfect! This coming weekend is the first annual Long John Jamboree down on Yellowknife Bay, so in partnership with them, we are going to show Canada how active we are.

All you have to do is when you go down to the jamboree grounds, Yellowknife Bay beside the Snow Castle, on Saturday, March 24, 2012 is pick up a pedometer from the City of Yellowknife tent and record all your walking around at the jamboree, maybe walk out to the ice road and back if you can ;) . You can also take part in other festivities there as well, which they can tell you more out then.

So Yellowknife, let’s get active and make this happen. You can start showing your support by “Liking” the City of Yellowknife Live Right Now Facebook Page.

Long John Jamboree: Harvesting Ice Blocks

This is a public service announcement from the Long John Jamboree:

Yellowknife, March 14, 2012 – Beginning at 8:00 am, Saturday, March 17, workers will be harvesting blocks of ice in the northeast area of Yellowknife Bay near the Dettah Ice Road.

There will be several blocks removed for the Long John Jamboree Ice Carving Competition; all precautions have been taken to ensure the safety of the workers and equipment.

We are notifying residents to avoid the area, as there will be heavy equipment and a large flatbed truck.

Once the ice is removed, there will be snow fencing, berms and markers to identify the area until the water has refrozen and is safe for access.

For any questions or concerns, please contact Keith MacNeill at 446-0554.

Long John Jamboree: De Beers Canada Ice Carving

I’ll be straight with you, I’m directly posting a press release about the Long John Jamboree. I believe in this festival and want to help promote it anyway I can, that being said, I’m busy at the moment. So here is the press release sent to me. Cheers

Long John Ice Carving

Yellowknife, February 23, 2012 – The Long John Jamboree, Yellowknife’s new winter festival, is pleased to announce that one of its premier events will be the inaugural De Beers Canada Inspired Ice: NWT Ice Carving Championship.

The event will invite world-class ice carvers from the NWT and beyond, to compete in creating artistic sculptures out of natural ice from Great Slave Lake.

“Ice, like diamonds, can be carved into beautiful works of art that capture the exquisite beauty of nature” said Cathie Bolstad, Director of External & Corporate Affairs for De Beers Canada. “We are excited to help create a signature event that we hope can grow into a major attraction for the Northwest Territories.”

The Ice Carving Championship will take place in the centre of the Jamboree site on Yellowknife Bay, near the city’s historic Old Town. Carvers will craft their creations surrounded by other entertaining northern events. “It promises to be a great spectacle and a focal point of the Jamboree,” said Adrian Bell, Jamboree President. “We are truly grateful to De Beers Canada for their vision and support in getting Inspired Ice off the ground.”

Carving will begin with the Jamboree’s Opening Ceremonies at noon on Friday, March 23rd. Teams of two artists will have 24 hours to complete their works. Judging will take place from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, Sunday, March 25th, with prizes awarded on the Jamboree Snow Stage immediately following. Sculptors will compete for $8,500 in prize money.

The public will have a chance to vote for their favorite in the Public Choice Award. Other awards will include Media Choice and Carvers’ Choice.

Artists can register for the competition until 5:00 pm Mountain time, March 7th, 2012. Information and details are available on the Jamboree website, www.longjohnjamboree.ca
