Traffic Lanes Change

I forgot to publish this last Thursday when City of Yellowknife crews painted and rearranged the road lines. New turning lanes have been added to the intersection at Woolgar and Kam Lake Road. If you have already driven through the area, be aware that lanes are now different.

On another note, I also saw, what I assume to be, someone counting vehicles at the intersection of Finlayson Dr and Kam Lake Road. Are studies being done as to if another set of traffic lights need to be added. What are your thoughts on adding another set of traffic lights to Kam Lake Road?

New Asphalt on Franklin

If you drove from the Fire Hall towards the Winks gas station over the weekend you would have noticed the construction happening. City of Yellowknife crews repaved the 2 lane road with new “flatter” asphalt in hopes to get rid of some of the heave in the road.

Asphalt was laid over the old heaved and patched asphalt. Crews first went over the road and leveled it as best as possible and then finished with a thick layer of fresh asphalt. Hopefully this improves this part of the road for at least a couple years.

Time to head across the Mighty MacKenzie River

Whether you are coming or going, or live here or are just visiting, if you drive between May and December you will probably cross the MacKenzie River on the Merv Hardie Ferry. The Ferry is located just outside the community of Fort Providence and operates daily. The first trip across is at 6am the last for the day normally around 12pm sometime.

Most of the time it is smooth sailing, but you do get the occasional bump which may cause some delay. Things like low water levels, ice blockage or just mechanical issue with the ferry can put it out of commission with little to no notice. Best way to keep informed is to check the Department of Transportation website before heading out on the highway.

In this episode I talk about things to be aware of when it come to freeze-up and spring-thaw and how Yellowknife isn’t affected as much as it once was. I go more into depth on the ferry operations and a bit about the Deh Cho Bridge.

All that and more information you’ll want to hear in episode 16 of Yk Quick Tips. Remember to SUBSCRIBE via iTunes and send in your Yellowknife related questions to info@ykonline.ca

Going on Holidays

Open Road, Western AustraliaEvery year I have taken a break from work and headed out on the open road. I enjoy traveling through Western Canada and seeing the landscape and places I rarely see. I’m sure this is the same for a lot of people. Maybe not Western Canada, but anywhere in general. As much as we may love living in Yellowknife (or not) we have to get out for a bit. Whether to visit family back home, or just to see something new.

On September 1st I will be heading to Calgary to start my 20 day journey. I’ll be heading through Alberta into the mountains and then into British Colombia. If you’re interested you can read more on my personal blog travel section. This post is not about where I’m going, it is about the huge favour I need to ask.

YkOnline.ca means the world to me. I have met so many amazing people through this website and it is the Yellowknife Community that I truly cherish. Which You Preferred

A couple of months ago I added a poll to the sidebar to fill a space. I didn’t think it would take very well, I never liked polls myself, but nonetheless it was there. The question I asked was, “What Do You Prefer.” With two options, Bullock’s Bistro and Wildcat Cafe. The entire time the poll was open, Bullocks kept a slight lead, never more than a couple percent. Now I don’t know why that is, but I thought it was a good sign that both restaurants were fairly close the whole time.

Which do you Prefer

  • Bullocks Bistro (53%, 54 Votes)
  • The Wildcat Cafe (47%, 48 Votes)

Total Voters: 102

August Tweetup

We have not had a Tweetup in Yellowknife in a couple of months. After getting a couple of requests I finally decided to put the wheels in motion. Tweetups in Yellowknife are nothing like those in bigger cities, but we still have a good group of people who come out to say hi.

What is a Tweetup: A Tweetup is a gathering of Twitter users for a time of talk in real life. We may talk to each other every day online, but may have never met. This is the opportunity to meet and put handles to faces. We are definitely not just a bunch of Geeks, we are parents, teachers, bloggers, communicators, and every other type of occupation out there. Twitter is no longer for the select few, it is quickly become a mainstream way of communication.

Everyone is invited, like I say above, Twitter is for everyone. Even if you are not on Twitter but want to learn more, come out and ask. We will – collectively – tell you that Twitter is useful for one reason or another, most of the time for entirely different reasons.

Come over to Javaroma at 1pm on Sunday, August 29, 2010. I enjoy meeting new people so don’t be shy. If you have any questions, don’t be afraid to give me a call before hand.

Panini on a Patio at Le Stock Pot

I wrote this a month and a half ago and never published it. Since Yellowknife seems to be getting its last bit of Summer I thought I would throw this out there.

I have become obsessed with sitting out on patios and decks around town to enjoy the wonderful Yellowknife weather, when it is nice of course. That is why I love grabbing a quick-lunch at Le Stock Pot.  Although I would recommend taking a late lunch if you plan to eat on their patio, it can get full, quick.

Le Stock Pot

The building itself, was, I’m sure at one time a residential home, and then transformed to house a small business. A hair salon once occupied the space before Le Stock Pot took over. The patio, which is to the left in the photo below, has just enough room to fit 8 or so tables, which makes it feel comfortable, and not crowded.

Le Stock Pot

The Chicken Club Panini, which quickly became my favorite meal item, is pre-made with a thick chicken breast, bacon, tomato and delicious sauce, which I can’t pin point. As it is pre-made all that needs to be done is a quick grill and you are good to go. If you don’t want a Panini there is the option to build your own sandwich. There are many breads, meats, cheeses and toppings to choose from and the staff always seems happy to help you build your master piece.

Le Stock Pot

I have to admit, the first time I got the Chicken Club Panini, I did it purely because I felt rushed in line, but I am glad I did. In my opinion I felt I was getting more than what I paid for, then again my Money to Food ratio might be off. Either way the Panini was a good size for me and if need be, a good choice for on the go.

Le Stock Pot

If you are looking to change-up your lunch menu a bit, or are craving a good fresh sandwich or Panini, I would check out Le Stock Pot. Then when you do leave a comment about your experience, what is the best to get?

Zombie Walk of 2010

Did you see the living dead wobbling down the streets of Yellowknife today? These fine specimens braved the sun light and came out for the 2nd Annual Arctic Apocalypse. 25 Zombies walked, crawled, limped and wobbled up Franklin Ave around 3pm Saturday afternoon.

The earliest Zombie Walks can be dated back to 2001. According Wikipedia, Zombie Walks, were billed as The Zombie Parade and the “brain”-child of Bryna Lovig. Just like any other public event, the Zombie Walk has a vibrant history, known to help charities, broken World Records and of course brought up controversy.

One of the “head” Zombies said he was happy with this years turn out and hopes to continue making this any annual event. Here are pictures and video of the walk.

Where do you rent a Canoe or Kayak in Yellowknife?

I have seen the question come up a few times this summer, most recently earlier this week. Where can someone rent a canoe or kayak in Yellowknife?

Well, there are two different places, that I know of. Both are locally owned and operated and I trust both equally. Ironically the price to rent from both places is the same, so in my opinion it doesn’t matter which one you go to. The only deciding factor might be who has what available.

The first is Narwal Adventures, they are located down on back bay and you could easily launch into the water right from their front yard. The second place is Overlander Sports and they are considered the all-in-one sports shop for Yellowknife. They provider equipment for almost every sport out there. They are located in downtown Yellowknife and have been in business for over 25 years, all 25 owned and operated by the same people.

Like I mentioned in the show, Yellowknife is surrounded by many lakes perfect for taking a paddle, but be safe. There are also some routes for the more adventurous ones. According to websites, canoe and kayak rentals start at $45/day and go up from there to 7 day for $200.

All that and more information you’ll want to hear in episode 15 of Yk Quick Tips. Remember to subscribe via iTunes and send in your Yellowknife related question to info@ykonline.ca
