Video Slams Yellowknife

A Youtube video made the rounds yesterday on the Internet. The video titled “Helping a Tourist in Yellowknife” is only a cover to what is actually said. The video pokes fun at, humiliates and generally slams a persons view of Yellowknife. The video creator is unknown and only goes by Yellowkniferable. The video was created the same way the popular iPhone 4 vs HTC Evo video was created using the online tool Xtra Normal. The tool allows users to transform text, or dialog in to a video.

Whether true or not, I hate seeing a piece of media only slamming our town. I understand that we are not perfect, but I truly believe we have a lot of good going as well.

    Quite good… not far from hitting the mark… most every point marks the kind of real stereotype folks have to deal with… almost word for word what I’d say to a naive tourist to make sure they don’t get into trouble..

    I have to agree that the video only really tells information that most yellowknifers know already and would advise a family or friend with. For a tourist viewer to actually take the video seriously and think that there are no good qualities about this city…well then maybe they shouldnt be visiting here anyway.

    Oh common we all know we have alot to offer up here!!!!! It can be a bautiful place to live and visit… Like anything else in life it is what you make of it!!! This video was meant to be funny and it is funny and some parts accurate… Grab a sence of humor People seriously!!!!

    Yes there are some valid points in this video, but that doesn’t make it ok. Its supposed to be funny? Really? So you think its ok to make fun of people because of where they are from and the fact that they come up here for work, and are reward good jobs, because they are hard, loyal, and decent workers. Personally, as a long time resident of Yellowknife, this offends me. Like my mother always told me, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Maybe the maker of this video should take a better look at what yellowknife has to offer. Yes it costs a lot to live up here, but thats the price you pay for living in an isolated community. You have to pay the extra cost, or are you willing to go south and transport everythign up here on your dime, and charge us all a little less? No i didn’t think so.

    We’re way too sensitive if we see this as “slamming”. It’s obviously a joke. Maybe it’s not funny enough, but it’s definitely not slamming.

    Ha! Lighten up all, it’s hilarious.

    It cracks me up that people up here complain about the cost of living. You may pay $5 more for groceries, but your salary is also 20-30% higher! If you think YK is expensive, you’ve been living here too long.

    This video is spot on and if you don’t agree then maybe you should open you eye’s and take a real good look around town. I’m not saying there aren’t good things about Yellowknife but none of the things he made fun of in the video would be on the list of good things about Yellowknife. The problem with Yellowknife and tourism is that people always tell guests in Yellowknife that they have to see the Gold Range and they must have dinner at Bullocks. Well the video was spot on about the Range and Bullocks is probably the worst restaurant anywhere ever. You go in there and the staff is rude and not helpful in anyway and then if you ever do get any food there its terrible. There is nothing appealing about going there. Also Le Wild Cat…. What a joke. Chef Pierre taking it over was a huge mistake but Yellowknife let him buy up most of the restaurants in town because his first one was so good at first but now he is spread to thin and the quality has gone down and all the food at all his places is so similar its like going to the same place no matter where you go. The only good places to go out as long as they are still there are the Noodle House and The Taste of Saigon and that Italian place that was or is up by the Monkey tree. The best thing about Yellowknife is fishing on the great slave lake out on the east arm and the last I heard they might be trying to take that away and turn it into some sort of park where they can stop at least the white people from fishing. If you really look at it the best thing about Yellowknife is whats around it and not whats in it.

    Hilarious. And true! Except that it is only a 20 minute wait in line at Javaroma.
