Earth Hour is an international event that asks households and businesses to turn off their lights and non-essential electrical appliances for one hour on the evening of March 27 at 8.30 pm local time until 9.30 pm to promote electricity conservation and thus lower carbon emissions.
It is promoted by World Wide Fund for Nature Australia (WWF), an environmental lobby group, and the Sydney Morning Herald. The first Earth Hour was held in Sydney, Australia between 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm on 31 March 2007. The 2007 Earth Hour is estimated to have cut Sydney’s mains electricity consumption by between 2.1% and 10.2% for that hour, with as many as 2.2 million people taking part. Earth Hour 2008 marks the first anniversary of the event with many partner cities and individuals around the world participating.
Because of Yellowknife’s location, in the middle of nowhere, I always thought it would be neat if we all turned off our lights. The reason is simple, because if we did, those flying over would no longer see us. We would vanish into the night air. So, Yellowknife, join me on March 27 between 8:30pm and 9:30pm by turning of your lights and attempting to lower carbon emissions. I don’t care if you don’t believe in being environmentally friendly or if you think Al Gore is a weirdo, do it because it would be a neat experience.
