CJCD Join the Radio Revolution

Dear CJCD,

How have you been? I haven’t heard you in a while. I just popped over to your website again and saw that nothing has changed and wasn’t surprised. Guys, do you still want to be the best radio station of the north? I’m sure you do that’s why I think it would be wise to invest a little time into revamping your website.

I recently started following a host from CKLB on twitter and from there was lead to their website and I was quite impressed.

Not only did it have a fresh looking design, it was also interactive. Listeners are able to comment and give their opinion on content that has been posted by the hosts. Which I think is big for people, especially in today’s world when everyone has something to say.  Did you know CJCD, that you can also stream their radio station online? While it is live! I know that’s why I don’t listen to you anymore. I don’t have a radio handy while I’m working or at home, all I have is the Internet. Most stations these days offer steaming online, from local stations such as CKLB to Sirius and XM Satellite Radio. I think it would be work looking into nonetheless.

Another little tip I have for you to consider would be making your News stories that you put up on your supposed website into a RSS feed. Doing this will only benefit you. I’m sure it would be easier to put online and with a RSS feed people would be more inclined to reading it. They would be able to still view it off your website (I guess if they really still wanted to) but they would also be able to subscribe to the feed either via e-mail or Feed Reader. By making it more accessible and easier to read you are more than likely going to gain a larger loyal following.

If you wanted to go the extra mile or 1.609 kilometer with the RSS feed you could go on over to Twitter and make yourself an account and syndicate your feed with your account. So when you publish a breaking news article or any article for that matter your followers would know right away.  You could also make the account more personal and be like Fort St. John’s @derrickhand from 101.5 The Bear who tweets promotions, releases, advertising, etc. for his followers.

Well I can only hope you consider some of these ideas as they are all completely beneficial to you.

Sincerely

The Bushman.

Readers now its your turn. Do you think CJCD or any busines for that matter should join the Social Networking wave and become more socially active online?

  5. Ashley says:

i think you guys should get the facts before you start making assumptions. you don’t know the details as to why we aren’t what you guys want.

  6. Kyle says:

@AshleighBee True, I completely agree with you. You have told me that it is due to cost and such and I understand, but please note when this post was written May 2009. It is not how I go about writing posts today. It is also why I said “I wrote this so long ago now”.
Hope your having a good weekend.

  7. Hughie says:

Thanks for a reply ashlee, it’s too bad that it was arguementative instead of constructive

Of course, you could always brew your own RSS feed. At no cost and with little effort. I used feedity.com to create an RSS feed for CJCD that I’ve been using to subscribe to their news stories for months. Took me about two minutes. Maybe less.

It’s obviously not official and I wouldn’t publish the link without their consent, but it’s handy for my own personal use.

That’s hilarious. “You don’t know the details as to why we aren’t what you guys want.” Really? You’re an entertainer. Your raison d’être is to be what we want. Granted you’re horrible at it and we only listen to you if no one on the crew has a Sirius or an iPod, and even so it’s more fun to sing our own songs than listen to you, and when we DO listen to you there’s always someone shouting at the radio for you to shut up… but still, you’re supposed to be an entertainer. You have no validity other than in doing what we want. Dance, puppet, dance!

mongoose is right. if you are trying to sell people something, when they provide feedback about how to make your service better, the correct response is NOT “you just don’t understand why we CANNOT do that”. i would think it would be more along the lines of “great! thanks for the feedback! we will certainly take steps to make our service valuable to you the user.”

  11. Megan says:

RSS feeds are expensive? I’ve got twelve of them, and they were all free.

  12. Amy H. says:

i dont think its the feed itself that is expensive, but the fact that their website is not set up in such a way as to generate one, and they are incapable of figuring out any of the tools like the on Shaun talked about. therefore, they would have to pay a contractor to set it up for them. i think. that is the only way that what she is saying would make any sense.

  13. Megan says:

It just took me five seconds to build one in Feedity. Here you go, Ashley. No charge.

I simply don’t use CJCD website. Why bother? They certainly don’t seem to want to use it as a means to communicate with their audience. The info is limited, there is no share option and the news they report does not show up on the site quickly (sometimes I’ve had to wait a day or two for the text version).

I do listen to the radio every AM while getting ready for work. All last week, the DJ told me that CJCD is aware of the problems with their site (mainly the “Good Person of the Day” link) and that they are in the process of fixing it.

I would LOVE for all local media to host sites that report news quickly and allow their clients to share that news. Is that so unrealistic?

@Ashley, I really am not concerned about the details as to why CJCD is not what I expect it, or its website, to be. I assume CJCD is the way it is because that’s how it wants to be. The fact is, the way CJCD is, does not stop me from being who I want to be so it’s of no consequence to me if it changes or not. But it would be nice.

  15. Liz Hargreaves says:

I would like to see CJCD update its site, but logically the economics right now won’t support it. It would have to invest money into redesign and maintenance that would be difficult to recoup given competition from larger, more established sites.

The online advertising pie in Yellowknife is pretty small, so you’d need a big piece of it to make it a viable business proposition.

Also, I would like to say: people commenting are people – not businesses – unless the business name is specified in their comment. Thanks.
